Why there is no direct Airtel-to-SHA paybill
SHA publishes exactly one payment shortcut for members: Paybill 200222 on the Safaricom M-PESA network. It is not published as an Airtel Money paybill on sha.go.ke (accessed 26 August 2026). Airtel Money has its own paybill/pay-merchant menu, but it uses different business codes on the Airtel network and does not currently list SHA as a native Airtel Money merchant per Airtel Kenya's public menus.
This does not lock Airtel users out. Kenyan mobile-money interoperability, launched by CBK, lets any Airtel Money user send money to a Safaricom M-PESA number and vice versa. That transfer completes near-instantly. Once the money is in an M-PESA wallet, the standard SHA paybill flow works.
Step by step
Step 1: send from Airtel Money to your own Safaricom line
If you also have a Safaricom line (many Kenyans dual-SIM), send the money to yourself. Otherwise, send to a trusted family member who agrees to complete the SHA payment on your behalf (see How to pay SHA for someone else).
- Open Airtel Money (My Airtel app, or dial
*334#). - Choose Send Money, then the option to send to Other Networks (or similarly named).
- Enter the Safaricom M-PESA phone number.
- Enter the amount, plus a buffer for the cross-network fee.
- Confirm with PIN.
The Safaricom recipient gets an M-PESA credit SMS.
Step 2: from the Safaricom M-PESA wallet, Pay Bill 200222
- Open M-PESA on the Safaricom phone.
- Choose Lipa na M-PESA, then Pay Bill.
- Business number: 200222.
- Account number: the National ID of the SHA member being paid for.
- Amount: the SHA figure owed. Minimum KES 300 [Source 2].
- Confirm with PIN.
M-PESA sends the standard SHA confirmation SMS. From there, follow how to check your SHA payment went through.
Fees, and where to check them
Two fees apply:
- Airtel Money cross-network fee. Charged by Airtel when you send from an Airtel Money wallet to a Safaricom M-PESA number. Tariffs are banded by amount and change from time to time. Dial
*334#on your Airtel Money line for the current tariff. Do not rely on third-party tariff pages, they lag. - M-PESA Pay Bill fee. SHA absorbs this. The M-PESA SMS shows "Transaction cost: KES 0" because SHA covers the paybill charge. So this leg is free to you [Source 3].
Timing
Two stages of delay:
- Airtel-to-M-PESA transfer: typically settles within minutes on the interoperability rail. Rare cross-network outages can push this to an hour.
- SHA reconciliation: once the payment lands on Paybill 200222, add the standard 24 to 72 hour window for it to appear on afyayangu.go.ke. USSD
*147#usually reflects sooner, within an hour.
So end-to-end: cover is usually reactivated within 24 to 72 hours of you initiating the Airtel Money send, subject to the reconciliation lag.
Alternatives worth knowing
Convert to cash via an Airtel Money agent, then M-PESA
Withdraw from Airtel Money at an Airtel agent, then deposit into an M-PESA wallet at an M-PESA agent, then Pay Bill. Slower, more agent hops, more total fees. Generally worse than the cross-network route unless you happen to be at an Airtel agent with no phone credit.
Ask a family member on Safaricom to pay for you
If you send airtime-equivalent value to a Safaricom-using family member (via any route), they can Pay Bill 200222 with your ID. This is the same mechanic as the diaspora-remittance flow. See How to pay SHA for someone else.
Wait until SHA supports Airtel Money direct payment
This is not currently supported per sha.go.ke (accessed 26 August 2026). We do not fabricate a launch date. If SHA publishes an Airtel Money direct paybill, we will update this page and add a note to /paybill/sha.
If your SHA payment does not reflect
The Airtel Money leg does not change SHA's reconciliation behaviour. If the payment shows as delivered on the M-PESA side (transaction cost KES 0, recipient SHA) but does not appear on afyayangu.go.ke within 72 hours, follow the standard SHA payment not reflecting recovery flow.
If the Airtel-to-M-PESA transfer itself failed (no M-PESA credit SMS on the receiving Safaricom line), contact Airtel first on 111, not SHA. That is an Airtel Money support issue, not a SHA one.
