The Social Health Authority replaced NHIF on 1 October 2024 under the Social Health Insurance Act 2023. SHA operates three funds under one authority: the Primary Healthcare Fund (PHF), the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF, where contributions land), and the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund (ECCIF). Contributions from every Kenyan resident flow through M-PESA paybill 200222 with your National ID as the account number. The rule is 2.75% of gross monthly income, minimum KES 300, no upper cap. For salaried employees (Tier 1) the employer deducts 2.75% from gross before PAYE and remits via employers.sha.go.ke by the 9th of the following month; you should not personally pay via paybill 200222 unless you are topping up a missed month. For non-salaried Kenyans (Tier 2) the premium is set through the Means Testing Instrument at afyayangu.go.ke and paid monthly via paybill 200222. Paying SHA from outside Kenya
If you are abroad and this is a bill for family at home, the usual route costs you twice. You pay a transfer fee to get money into someone's M-PESA, then paying 200222 from that wallet is charged again on the M-PESA paybill tariff.
Before you send, check whether your transfer provider can pay a Kenyan paybill directly rather than paying a person. If it can, the money goes straight to SHA, the second charge never happens, and nobody at home has to do anything. Providers differ on this and it changes, so confirm it in your own app rather than taking anyone else's word.

The money is not lost. SHA reconciles by National ID; a mistyped ID lands the payment in the SHA suspense ledger. Call 0800 720 601 with your M-PESA confirmation code, correct National ID, and the phone number that sent the payment. Manual re-attribution typically completes within 2 to 3 weeks. If urgent (upcoming hospital visit), walk into the nearest SHA branch or Huduma Centre with the M-PESA SMS and your ID card for same-day re-attribution.
Your payslip shows the SHA deduction but afyayangu.go.ke says you are inactive (Tier 1 employees).
This is an employer-remittance linking issue, not a payment issue. Employers must remit by the 9th of the following month, so a September deduction may not reflect until mid-October. Confirm with your payroll team that your National ID and SHA member number are correctly captured in the employers.sha.go.ke portal.
