About Paybill fees

Safaricom Paybill is the M-PESA channel for paying registered businesses, government agencies, banks, schools, churches, and utilities. The customer pays a per-transaction fee that scales with the amount, set by Safaricom and identical regardless of the paybill recipient.

The schedule is bracketed: KES 100 or less is free, then fees climb gradually until they cap at KES 105 for transactions over KES 50,000. The calculator above looks up your exact bracket and shows the fee in one place.

Frequently asked

How much does it cost to pay a Paybill?

Paybill fees in 2026 follow Safaricom's published bracket schedule. KES 100 or less is free, then fees scale from KES 5 (small amounts) up to a flat KES 105 cap (large amounts). Use the calculator above for the exact figure on any amount.

Why is Paybill cheaper than Send Money?

Safaricom subsidises Paybill transactions because the receiving business pays a separate merchant fee. The customer-side cost is structured to encourage Paybill use for utilities, taxes, and recurring payments where the business already pays Safaricom.

Is the Paybill fee the same for all paybills?

Yes. The customer fee is determined by the amount sent, not by which paybill receives it. KPLC, KRA, school fees, churches, banks all use the same Safaricom Paybill fee schedule on the sender side.

Does the fee include excise duty?

Yes. The 1% excise on M-PESA fees (paid to KRA) is bundled into the displayed fee. What the calculator shows is what you pay.

Can I pay a Paybill from Airtel Money or T-Kash?

For interoperable Paybills, yes, but the fee structure differs. This calculator covers the Safaricom M-PESA to Paybill case. For Airtel Money or T-Kash see our network comparison guides.
