KRA: the PIN, the PRN, and the two paybills that are both live

KRA runs on two live paybills, not one: 222222 and 572572 are both current, and your PRN slip names which of the two that payment wants. Everything else starts with the PIN.

About KRA and iTax

The Kenya Revenue Authority collects tax and customs revenue and runs iTax at itax.kra.go.ke, where PINs are issued, returns are filed and certificates are verified. KRA is also listed as an agency on eCitizen. Payments are made against a Payment Registration Number (PRN) generated by iTax, on whichever paybill the PRN slip names.

Nothing else in this cluster works until this exists.

Paying KRA

The PRN decides the paybill, not the other way round.

Frequently asked

What is the KRA paybill number?

There are two live ones. 222222 is the Government Single Payment Platform and 572572 is the KRA-specific paybill. Your PRN slip names which of the two that payment wants. Use the one on your slip.

Was KRA paybill 572572 retired?

No. The 2023 eCitizen consolidation added 222222; it did not remove 572572. Both are current. This site published the opposite for a period and corrected it on 13 September 2026.

How do I get a KRA PIN?

On itax.kra.go.ke, under New PIN Registration. Read the Guidelines for PIN Registration linked beside it first, because picking the wrong taxpayer type is the usual reason an application is rejected.

How do I check whether a KRA PIN is real?

Use the free PIN Checker on the iTax portal home page. No login needed. It tells you whether the PIN exists and who holds it.

What is a PRN?

A Payment Registration Number, generated in iTax for a specific liability. It is the account number you pay against, and it tells you which paybill to use.

I paid but iTax still shows the liability as unpaid.

Usually a PRN mismatch or an expired PRN rather than a lost payment. Our PRN-not-reflecting guide walks through tracing it with the M-PESA code.
