Visit WisePayPal in Kenya is a personal-account-only service with a one-way withdrawal path to M-PESA via Equity. It works for occasional receipts from abroad; it does not work as a sustained freelance payout rail. This page is the verified reference — fees, the M-PESA flow, what to do when your account is restricted, and the genuine alternatives.
Kenyan PayPal accounts are personal-grade only. You can receive USD (and a handful of other currencies) from senders worldwide; you can hold the balance for up to 30 days; you can withdraw via the Safaricom-Equity-M-PESA service or to a linked KCB/Equity bank account. You cannot run a business account. You cannot keep multi-currency balances indefinitely. You can't use it as your primary commercial PSP — but for receiving family money, occasional one-off freelance receipts, or paying foreign vendors, it works fine.
Use the PayPal-Equity-M-PESA service. Log in at safaricom.co.ke/paypal-mpesa, link your PayPal account, choose the USD amount, accept the displayed FX rate, confirm. Funds land in M-PESA within 2-3 business days. Fee is 1.5% of the converted amount + the embedded FX margin (typically 1.5-2.5% below mid-market). For larger sums, withdrawing to a linked KCB or Equity USD account first, then to M-PESA, can be cheaper.

Open the calculatorPayPal restricts Kenyan accounts for three main reasons: receiving commercial payments on a personal account, repeated chargebacks, or KYC document mismatch. Our recovery flow guide walks through the order that actually works: complete the requested verification first, document everything, then appeal if rejected — not the other way round. Average resolution when followed in order is 7-14 days. Trying to appeal first almost always extends the lock.

Visit SendvaluYes from most countries — but with a critical limitation: Kenyan PayPal accounts are personal accounts that can receive but cannot hold a USD balance for long. Funds must be withdrawn within 30 days via the PayPal-Equity-M-PESA service or to a linked KCB account. Receiving from sanctioned countries (Iran, North Korea, certain regions) is blocked. Receiving from family members is fine; receiving as a freelancer for commercial work requires a business-grade upgrade that PayPal does not yet offer in Kenya — many freelancers work around this with Payoneer or Wise.
Use the PayPal-Equity-M-PESA service: log in at safaricom.co.ke/paypal-mpesa, link your PayPal account, choose the USD amount, and convert to KES at the displayed rate. Funds land in M-PESA within 2-3 business days. Fee is 1.5% + an FX margin (roughly 1.5-2.5% below mid-market). For larger amounts, withdrawing to a linked Kenyan bank (KCB, Equity) is sometimes cheaper.
Three layers: PayPal's 4.4% + USD 0.30 per transaction on commercial receipts (less for friends/family); the FX margin of 3-4% built into PayPal's exchange rate; and the M-PESA withdrawal fee on the final M-PESA cash-out. Total: on USD 100 received, a Kenyan typically ends up with KES 12,000-12,500 in hand depending on the rate. Our calculator (in development for Phase 2) will show the exact number for today's FX.
PayPal restricts Kenyan accounts most often for: receiving commercial payments on a personal account (4-step recovery path), repeated chargebacks, or KYC document mismatch. Our detailed recovery flow guide walks through what works in practice — the order matters: do not appeal first, complete the requested verification first, then appeal if rejected. Average resolution is 7-14 days when followed in order.
Yes — personal accounts are open to Kenyan residents with a valid national ID and a Kenyan address. The signup is straightforward at paypal.com/ke/signup. Business accounts are NOT available in Kenya as of May 2026 (this is the single biggest constraint for freelancers and small e-commerce sellers). Most Kenyan e-commerce operations therefore use Wise, Payoneer, or Stripe Atlas for international receivables.
For receiving from abroad: Wise (cheapest FX, real-time), Payoneer (works well for Upwork/Fiverr), Sendwave (cheapest USD-to-M-PESA), WorldRemit (largest country coverage). For sending USD abroad: Wise or your bank's SWIFT (banks are usually 3-5x more expensive). Our /diaspora hub covers each corridor with actual current fees.
No. As of May 2026, only personal PayPal accounts are available in Kenya. Business-grade features (invoicing, multi-currency hold, dispute protection at scale) are not offered. Workarounds: Stripe Atlas (incorporate a US entity), Wise Business (KES + multi-currency accounts), Payoneer (purpose-built for freelancers). Each has different cost and admin overhead — see our PayPal alternatives guide.
Yes, for the use cases it supports (receiving from family, occasional commercial receipts, the PayPal-M-PESA withdrawal). The risks are commercial — accounts get restricted unexpectedly, holds can be 6 months, and the personal-account-only limitation makes it unsuitable for sustained freelance income. Always keep an alternative (Wise, Payoneer) set up in parallel.
