Every M-PESA error message that pops up on a Kenyan phone screen has a specific cause and a specific fix. This is the lookup table: every code (MR101, MR105, MR110), every generic message, what triggers it, and what to do. Verified June 2026 against live testing and Safaricom support pages.

Every error code, full detail
MR102Unable to complete transaction
Cause: Generic Safaricom-side failure. Usually a temporary network or switch issue that did not return a specific error.
Fix: Retry after 5 minutes. If it persists across multiple tries, check your M-PESA balance: the transaction may have actually completed despite the error.
MR105Sorry, you cannot pay using Lipa na M-PESA
Cause: The recipient paybill or till is suspended, has invalid configuration, or has hit its operator-side cap for the day.
Fix: Verify the paybill number against an official source. If correct, contact the merchant. If the paybill is on our directory, check the verification badge and report any issue via the page.
MR110Your request cannot be processed at this time
Cause: Account-level restriction. Usually triggered by KYC issues (expired ID), fraud flags, or recent suspicious activity.
Fix: Visit a Safaricom shop with your national ID for a manual review. The most common cause is an expired ID document on file.
Sorry, transaction failed
Cause: Catch-all for transactions that fail before reaching the Safaricom switch. Common when network is weak, when the recipient number is wrong, or when the paybill input is malformed.
Fix: Check phone signal, re-enter the recipient details carefully, and retry. If still failing, switch to *334# (instead of *144# or the app) and try again, the older menu sometimes succeeds when newer flows fail.
Insufficient funds in your M-PESA account
Cause: Balance plus available Fuliza limit is less than the transaction amount plus the tariff fee.
Fix: Deposit to M-PESA first. If you are already on Fuliza, check your remaining Fuliza headroom via *334# > Loans and Savings > Fuliza > My Limit. The tariff fee is the part most users forget; KES 1,000 sent over a paybill needs KES 1,000 + KES 12 to KES 35 in fees.
Receiver registration incomplete
Cause: The recipient phone number is on the Safaricom network but the M-PESA registration is not finalized. Common with new SIMs, SIM swaps, or accounts in temporary suspension.
Fix: Ask the recipient to complete M-PESA registration at any Safaricom shop with their ID. Until then, you cannot send to that number. Alternatives: send to a different family member, or wait until they complete registration.
Daily limit reached
Cause: You have hit the KES 500,000 daily M-PESA transaction ceiling (cumulative across send, withdraw, paybill, till).
Fix: Wait until midnight Kenya time for the daily counter to reset. For higher limits, upgrade to M-PESA Business. See our M-PESA limits 2026 cornerstone for the full ceiling and minimum tables.
Maximum balance exceeded
Cause: Incoming transaction would push the recipient wallet above KES 500,000.
Fix: The recipient needs to move existing balance out (to M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, or a bank) to make room. The sender is not charged; the funds never left the sender wallet.
Wrong PIN entered
Cause: You entered the incorrect M-PESA PIN. Three consecutive wrong entries locks the account.
Fix: Retry with the correct PIN. If locked, reset via *334# > My Account > Forgot PIN, or call 100 from a Safaricom line for support. Verify your ID; the reset uses your KYC data.
PIN locked. Please reset.
Cause: You entered the PIN incorrectly three times in a row.
Fix: Dial *334# > My Account > Forgot PIN, follow the prompts. You will be asked for your national ID number, date of birth, and recent M-PESA transaction details. Reset completes within minutes; the new PIN is sent via SMS.
Sorry, you are not allowed to perform this transaction
Cause: Tier restriction. Common for users registered with a passport (not Kenyan ID) hitting the KES 70,000 single-transaction limit, or users on a restricted tier due to KYC expiry.
Fix: Visit a Safaricom shop with valid Kenyan ID to upgrade to the standard tier. Foreigners on passport-based accounts are capped at restricted-tier limits permanently and cannot upgrade beyond KES 100,000 wallet ceiling.
Pending transaction. Please wait
Cause: A previous transaction is still being processed by the Safaricom switch. Common during high-traffic periods (month-end salary days, public holidays).
Fix: Wait 60 seconds. If still pending after 5 minutes, check your M-PESA SMS history: the previous transaction probably succeeded, and you may have been about to duplicate it. Avoid hitting send multiple times.
Cannot send to your own number
Cause: You tried to send M-PESA to the same number you are sending from.
Fix: Check the recipient number. If you intended a different person, fix the digits. If you intended to top up your own account from another source (M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, bank), use the Withdraw flow from that account instead of Send.
When nothing works
If none of the above resolves the issue, your account may need manual intervention. The escalation order:
- Dial 100 from a Safaricom line. Free, 24/7 support. Have your national ID and recent transaction codes ready.
- Visit a Safaricom shop. Bring valid Kenyan ID. They can clear KYC flags, unlock accounts, reset PINs, and re-verify identity for restricted-tier accounts.
- Email
customercare@safaricom.co.ke. Slower (24 to 48 hour response) but useful for documented disputes that need a paper trail. - Communications Authority of Kenya (CAK) complaint. If Safaricom support has not resolved the issue within 7 days, file at
ca.go.ke. CA escalations typically get a Safaricom response within 72 hours.

FAQ
What does MR101 mean on M-PESA?
MR101 means "service is currently unavailable", a Safaricom-side outage or scheduled maintenance window. It affects the entire M-PESA platform, not just your account. Wait 15 to 30 minutes and retry. Check Safaricom Twitter (@safaricomPLC) for live status.
Why does my M-PESA say "transaction failed"?
The generic "transaction failed" message is a catch-all for failures before reaching the Safaricom switch: weak network, wrong recipient details, malformed paybill input, or temporary congestion. Retry after checking phone signal and the recipient details. If it persists, try *334# instead of the M-PESA app.
What is MR105?
MR105 is "Sorry, you cannot pay using Lipa na M-PESA". The recipient paybill or till is suspended, misconfigured, or has hit its operator-side daily cap. Verify the paybill against an official source, then contact the merchant if correct.
Why does it say "Receiver registration incomplete"?
The recipient phone number is on Safaricom but the M-PESA registration is unfinalized. Common with new SIMs and SIM swaps. The recipient must visit a Safaricom shop with ID to complete registration before they can receive M-PESA. Until then, you cannot send to that number.
How do I unlock my M-PESA PIN?
Dial *334# > My Account > Forgot PIN. Provide your national ID number, date of birth, and recent M-PESA transaction details. The reset completes within minutes and the new PIN arrives via SMS.
Why does M-PESA say "Daily limit reached" when I have not transacted much?
The daily limit is cumulative across all transaction types: send + withdraw + paybill + till = KES 500,000 per day. Even multiple small transactions add up. Wait until midnight Kenya time for the counter to reset. Or upgrade to M-PESA Business for higher limits.
What does "Maximum balance exceeded" mean?
The recipient M-PESA wallet would exceed the KES 500,000 wallet ceiling after your transfer lands. The sender is not charged because the funds never leave the sending wallet; the rejection happens at the Safaricom switch. The recipient needs to move existing balance to M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, or a bank to make room.
