What the savings pot is

Every disbursement from Hustler Fund automatically diverts 5 percent to the savings pot. On a KES 5,000 loan, you receive KES 4,750 in M-PESA and KES 250 goes to savings. The pot earns interest per the fund terms (verify current rate at *254#).

This is why the effective disbursement of a Hustler Fund loan is 95 percent, not 100 percent, of the headline amount. Factor it into cash-flow planning.

The 70/30 split

Short-term pot (70 percent of savings)

Accessible after a defined maturity window (typically 12 months of continuous saving from first opt-in). Once matured, you can withdraw all or part of the short-term balance at any time via *254#.

Long-term pot (30 percent of savings)

Locked to the pension horizon (currently age 60 or on qualifying events). Governed like a pension: early withdrawal is not permitted except in cases of permanent disability, migration, or death.

Voluntary savings on top

Beyond the mandatory 5 percent, the fund offers a voluntary savings product accessed through the *254# menu. Voluntary savings are fully flexible (any amount, any frequency) and are typically accessible after the same maturity window as short-term mandatory savings.

Voluntary savings materially improve the Hustler Rating (see Hustler Fund loan limit not increasing) in addition to earning interest.

The withdrawal flow

  1. Dial *254#.
  2. Choose the Savings menu (menu number varies; usually 3 or 4).
  3. Select Short-Term Savings then Withdraw.
  4. Enter the amount (up to the matured balance).
  5. Enter M-PESA PIN; funds land in M-PESA within minutes.

You cannot withdraw more than the matured balance. If the pot shows zero withdrawable even though you have been borrowing, the maturity window has not elapsed yet.

Interest on the pot

The Hustler Fund savings pot earns interest at a rate announced periodically by the fund. Verify the current rate on the *254# menu or at hustlerfund.go.ke. The rate is typically above the M-PESA savings alternative but below dedicated SACCO deposit rates.

Tax treatment

Interest earned on regulated savings schemes in Kenya is subject to withholding tax at rates specified by the Income Tax Act. The fund typically withholds at source. For the specific numeric rate that applies to Hustler Fund interest income, consult KRA guidance or a tax professional. The rate has been adjusted multiple times since 2022 and this guide will not commit to a figure that may be stale.
