  4. Certification (clearance certificates)
  5. Loan Repayment

Choose Loan Status to get the headline balance by SMS. Choose Loan Statement to get a 6-month or 12-month history sent by SMS in chunks. The USSD is free of charge; standard SMS delivery applies.

Portal (helb.co.ke)

Log in with the email and password used during your loan application. If you have forgotten the password, use the reset flow with the email address on file. If you have forgotten the email, call 0711 052 000 or email contactcentre@helb.co.ke.

The dashboard shows:

  • Principal disbursed (total loan borrowed across years of study).
  • Accrued interest to date.
  • Administration fee (one-off, 1 percent of principal).
  • Insurance charge (annual, 1 percent of outstanding balance).
  • Total outstanding balance.
  • Payment history with M-PESA references.

Download the full statement as PDF from the same dashboard. Employers and lenders use this PDF as proof of HELB status.

Decoding the statement

A typical HELB statement for a graduate has four line items that add up to the total balance. Understanding them clarifies why your balance grew:

Principal

Sum of every year's disbursement. A four-year undergraduate on the mid-tier loan (KES 60,000 to 80,000 per year) typically shows KES 240,000 to 320,000 total principal.

Interest at 4 percent per annum

Interest accrues from the day each disbursement lands, not from graduation. That is the biggest surprise for most borrowers. By the time you graduate and finish the 1-year grace period, five years of accrued interest is baked in on the first-year disbursement.

1 percent administration fee

One-off, charged on first disbursement. Small in absolute terms but visible.

1 percent insurance

Annual, charged on the outstanding balance. Covers HELB against borrower death or permanent disability; if you die, your estate is not chased. Small in year one, larger over time as the balance sits.

When your balance does not look right

Three most common causes of a balance you do not recognise:

  1. Under-attributed repayment. A prior M-PESA payment was not applied. Check the payment history against your own M-PESA statement.
  2. Employer over-deduction gap. An employer stopped remitting but the deduction was still on your payslip. HELB never received it.
  3. Penalty for non-disclosure. HELB adds a KES 5,000 monthly penalty if you started employment and did not declare it. Historic penalties can accumulate to a large number.

If the balance does not reconcile, follow HELB payment not reflecting.

FAQ

What is the fastest way to check my HELB balance?

Dial *642# from any Safaricom line, log in, and choose Loan Status. The balance is returned by SMS in under a minute. No portal, no download.

Why is my balance bigger than what I borrowed?

HELB loans accrue 4 percent annual interest from disbursement, plus a one-off 1 percent administration fee and an annual 1 percent insurance charge. Over 4 to 6 years of study plus a 1-year grace period, a KES 300,000 loan can grow to roughly KES 380,000 before your first repayment.

Where do I find my HELB number?

It is printed on your original HELB loan letter, on the portal dashboard after login, and on any HELB SMS. If lost, log in with your ID and it is displayed on the profile page.

Can I check for someone else?

No. USSD works only from the SIM registered to the borrower. Portal requires the borrower email login. Confidentiality is enforced.
