What CRB is, in Kenya

Credit Reference Bureaus are private companies licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya to collect, hold, and share credit information about Kenyan borrowers. There are three CBK-licensed bureaus in Kenya:

  • TransUnion Kenya (formerly CRB Africa).
  • Metropol Corporation.
  • Creditinfo Credit Reference Bureau Kenya.

All three operate under the CBK Credit Reference Bureau Regulations, 2020 [Source 1], which set the framework for who reports, what they report, how long records are retained, and how borrowers can dispute or correct their listings. Every CBK-licensed lender, bank, microfinance bank, SACCO in the FOSA space, digital credit provider, and non-deposit-taking credit business is required to report to at least one CRB.

How long a negative listing stays on file

A negative CRB listing typically stays on record for 5 years from the date of the default event, per the CBK CRB Regulations, 2020 [Source 1]. Two things to be clear about:

  • Settling the debt does not automatically wipe the historical listing. The listing remains for the 5 years, but it should be updated to reflect "settled" status once the lender notifies the CRB.
  • The 5-year clock runs from the default event, not from settlement. A debt that went into default in 2023 and was settled in 2025 will still show a historical negative listing until 2028, though with a settled marker.

The practical implication is that clearance is really about two things at once: (1) getting the current status updated from "in default" to "settled," which is what most lenders care about when assessing a new application; and (2) waiting out the 5-year retention window for the historical listing to age off entirely.

The KES 1,000 floor

The CBK Credit Information Sharing framework prohibits blacklisting for defaults below KES 1,000 [Source 1]. If a lender has listed you for a sum under that floor, you have grounds for immediate dispute. Small-value listings are not uncommon on old digital lender products; if that is your situation, the dispute process below applies and the CRB should remove the listing on receipt of documentation.

The five-step clearance process

Step 1: settle the debt in full

The starting point is unavoidable. Whatever the debt is, it needs to be paid in full or, in some cases, settled at a negotiated discount agreed with the lender in writing. Partial settlements without written agreement do not clear the listing.

For Watu, Mogo, and other asset-finance debts, see what happens if you default on Watu Credit and the shortfall guide for the settlement mechanics. For device loans, see early settlement. For general hardship, see what to do if you cannot pay this month.

Step 2: get written confirmation of full settlement from the lender

A signed, dated letter or email from the lender confirming that the debt is settled and the outstanding balance is zero. Not verbal, not stamped in your notebook. This document is the single most important piece of paper in the clearance process.

Step 3: request the lender submits the update to the CRB within 30 days

The CBK framework requires the lender to notify the CRB within 30 days of full settlement [Source 1]. In your written communication to the lender, explicitly request this submission and reference the 30-day requirement. Keep a copy of that request.

Step 4: request your free annual credit report from each of the three CRBs

Every Kenyan is entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the three CRBs under the CBK framework [Source 1]. Request one from each of TransUnion, Metropol, and Creditinfo. Review each report for accuracy: the debt, the amount, the current status (should now read "settled"), and the reporting lender.

If any of the three reports still shows the debt as in default 30 to 45 days after your settlement, the lender has missed the notification deadline or the CRB has not processed the update. Move to step 5.

Step 5: formal dispute with the CRB directly

If the update has not been made, file a formal dispute directly with the CRB, providing the written settlement confirmation from step 2 and the free credit report showing the outdated status. The CRB is required to investigate and, on satisfactory documentation, update the listing.

If the dispute is unresolved after the CRB's internal process, escalate to CBK Consumer Protection. Both TransUnion, Metropol, and Creditinfo publish complaint contact channels; use them.

Clearance certificates and pricing

A standard CRB clearance certificate (the document some employers and landlords require) costs approximately KES 2,200 at each CRB (verify current pricing at the bureau of choice). This is a separate document from the free annual credit report. Every Kenyan is entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the three CRBs under the CBK framework [Source 1], which is sufficient for personal verification of the record but is not the same as a formal clearance certificate.

The myth: paying an agent to clear you faster

Every year, a large volume of "CRB clearance agents" on WhatsApp, X, and Facebook advertise fast clearance for a fee. The claim varies ("I know someone at the CRB", "I have a legal shortcut", "I can wipe your record in 48 hours for KES X"). All of these are scams. The clearance process is defined in regulation, runs through documented submissions, and cannot be short-circuited by a fee to an intermediary. The bureaus themselves publish their processes; nothing else is faster.

The single legitimate expedite is to ensure the lender submits the update promptly. That happens through you following up on the lender directly, not through an agent.

What you can still access while CRB-listed

Being CRB-listed does not close every borrowing door. Mainstream banks and digital lenders will typically decline, but some products remain accessible. See our detailed guide at can I get a loan when CRB listed for the honest picture. There is also a specific analysis of KCB M-PESA loan availability at KCB M-PESA loan when CRB-listed.

Regulatory framing

The CRB framework operates under the CBK Credit Reference Bureau Regulations, 2020 [Source 1]. The lender reporting into it must be CBK-licensed. Non-deposit-taking credit business providers were brought under CBK supervision by the Business Laws (Amendment) Act No. 20 of 2024, in force 27 December 2024 [Source 2], with section 33S penalties of up to 3 years imprisonment or KES 5 million for unlicensed operation. If you are being pressured on a debt by a lender that is not on the CBK register, they may not have the standing to CRB-list you in the first place. Verify at our CBK licence checker.

What to do today if you are CRB listed

  1. Request your free credit report from each of TransUnion, Metropol, and Creditinfo to confirm what is actually on your record. Do not act on a WhatsApp message from "a friend of a friend".
  2. If the listed debt is under KES 1,000, dispute the listing immediately with the CRB, referencing the KES 1,000 floor [Source 1].
  3. If the listed debt is legitimate, plan the settlement. If the amount is unmanageable, seek a written discount settlement with the lender before paying.
  4. On settlement, execute steps 2 to 5 above.
  5. Verify the lender at our CBK licence checker. An unlicensed lender may not have valid standing to have listed you.

FAQ

How long does a negative CRB listing stay on my record?

Typically 5 years from the date of the default event, per the CBK Credit Reference Bureau Regulations, 2020. Settling the debt does not automatically wipe the record; the historical listing remains, though it should be marked as settled.

How many CRBs are there in Kenya?

Three CBK-licensed Credit Reference Bureaus: TransUnion (formerly CRB Africa), Metropol, and Creditinfo Credit Reference Bureau Kenya. All three receive submissions from CBK-licensed lenders.

How long does the lender have to notify the CRB after I settle?

The CBK framework requires the lender to notify the CRB within 30 days of full settlement. If the update does not appear within that window, you can dispute the listing directly with the CRB.

How much does a CRB clearance certificate cost?

Standard CRB clearance certificates cost KES 2,200 (per current bureau pricing schedules, verify at the bureau of choice). Every Kenyan is entitled to one free credit report per year from each of the three CRBs under the CBK framework.

Can I get off CRB faster by paying an agent?

No. Any agent claiming to remove your CRB listing for a fee outside the formal process is running a scam. The genuine process is: settle the debt, get written confirmation, request the lender submits the update to the CRB, and if needed dispute directly with the CRB. No shortcut, no side channel.
