The two categories that skip CRB

1. Legitimate products with lighter or no CRB check

  • Hustler Fund (*254#). Government-subsidised, lighter checks. Prior CRB listings do not automatically disqualify. See our Hustler Fund review.
  • Fuliza (M-PESA overdraft). Overdraft on your M-PESA rather than a term loan; no formal CRB check at drawdown. See our Fuliza review.
  • SACCO emergency loans, if you are a member with savings. SACCOs check internal records first.
  • Chama or rotating savings group lending. No CRB involvement at all.
  • Some employer-payroll advances. If offered by your employer, no CRB check.

2. Unlicensed apps that skip CRB because they are not participating

These are the loans that come up first in a search for "loan app no CRB". They skip CRB because they are outside the CBK non-deposit-taking credit provider framework entirely. Practical consequences of borrowing from one:

  • Any complaint has limited regulatory recourse: CBK Consumer Protection cannot enforce against an entity it does not licence.
  • The lender still likely accesses your phone data. If used for third-party outreach, that is a Data Protection Act 2019 breach.
  • Rates and penalties can be enforced through informal channels (calls to your contacts, threats) that would be illegal for a licensed lender under the Code of Conduct.
  • The lender may report to CRB anyway, even without standing. Disputing an unlicensed lender listing is possible but time-consuming.

If you are CRB-listed and need to borrow

  1. Establish what the listing is. Request your free annual credit report from all three CRBs (TransUnion, Metropol, Creditinfo).
  2. Check the KES 1,000 floor. Listings for defaults under KES 1,000 are prohibited; dispute immediately if that applies. See how to get off CRB Kenya.
  3. Try Hustler Fund via *254#. Lighter checks; often lends to CRB-listed borrowers with modest limits.
  4. Try Fuliza. If you already have a limit, it may still be usable.
  5. SACCO or chama first. Cheapest, no CRB dependency.
  6. Consider negotiating with the creditor that caused the listing, rather than taking a new loan.

How to tell if an app is licensed

  1. Open the app terms and note the registered company name.
  2. Search the CBK register of non-deposit-taking credit providers for that name.
  3. Cross-check on the paybillke CBK licence checker.

The full playbook is at how to check if a lender is licensed in Kenya, in 2 minutes.

What not to do

  • Do not pay a "CRB agent" to clear you: it is a scam. See the CRB clearance guide.
  • Do not stack multiple app loans to pay another app loan. It compounds fast and none of them clear the underlying problem.
  • Do not give phone-contact access to an unlicensed lender if you have any option. The contacts can be used against you.

FAQ

Which Kenyan loan apps do not check CRB?

Two categories: (1) government-subsidised or overdraft-style products with lighter CRB checks, notably Hustler Fund and Fuliza; and (2) unlicensed app lenders that skip CRB because they operate outside the CBK framework. The first category is safe; the second is not.

Does Hustler Fund check CRB?

Hustler Fund uses lighter credit-history checks than commercial lenders and can lend to some borrowers with prior CRB listings. It is not a guarantee of approval; the fund does maintain its own repayment history.

Does Fuliza check CRB?

Fuliza is an overdraft on M-PESA and has historically not required a formal CRB check to draw. Persistent default can still lead to suspension of the facility and further collection through the issuer banks.

What if an unlicensed lender lists me on CRB?

An unlicensed lender may not have standing to legitimately list you. Dispute directly with the CRB, providing documentation. Escalate to CBK Consumer Protection and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
