The PayGo model in one paragraph
M-KOPA Loan Kenya Ltd (CBK-licensed 30 January 2023 as a non-deposit-taking credit provider [Source 1]) sells smartphones, solar home systems, TVs, and other assets on a pay-as-you-go model. The customer pays a deposit and a daily or weekly instalment over a fixed term. The asset contains a software or hardware locking mechanism that requires periodic activation. Each scheduled payment renews the activation window. Miss a payment and the window expires and the device stops working until payment resumes. On completion of the full financed price the device is permanently unlocked.
The mechanic is structurally identical to Safaricom's Lipa Mdogo Mdogo product for KaiOS and low-end Android devices, which locks on day 4 of a missed payment under the Safaricom published T&Cs [compare Source 2]. See our Lipa Mdogo Mdogo missed payment guide for the parallel product and the Lipa Mdogo Mdogo unlock guide for the unlock workflow.
Why an M-KOPA phone locks
Three common lock triggers on M-KOPA phones:
- Missed scheduled payment. The most common cause. The activation window elapses and the phone locks at the next power cycle or scheduled check.
- Attempted uninstall or tamper of the M-KOPA companion app. Some models embed the activation logic in a system app. Removing or blocking the app triggers a lock as a tamper response.
- Factory reset without proper deactivation. If the phone is factory-reset before the financed balance is cleared, the device relocks on first boot until the account is reconciled.
How to unlock after paying
The standard M-KOPA unlock workflow is:
- Make the payment via the M-KOPA paybill or the M-PESA menu path you were given at sale.
- Wait for the M-KOPA account to reflect the payment. This is usually seconds to minutes but can take longer during outages.
- Receive the unlock code by SMS from M-KOPA.
- Enter the unlock code on the lock screen or in the M-KOPA companion app.
- Power-cycle the phone if the lock screen does not release immediately after the code entry.
If the unlock code does not arrive within, say, 30 minutes of a payment that shows as successful on your M-PESA statement, the payment has almost certainly not been credited on the M-KOPA side. That is not a phone problem, it is a reconciliation problem, and the escalation route is different.
What to do if the payment is not reflecting
This is the single most common M-KOPA support ticket in Kenya. The playbook:
- Confirm the payment on your M-PESA statement, either via the M-PESA app, *334#, or the M-PESA transaction history. Note the transaction code (starts with letters), the exact amount, the paybill number, and the account number you entered.
- Check the account number you used. The single most common cause of a not-reflecting M-KOPA payment is that the account number entered on M-PESA does not match the account number on the M-KOPA file. A typo or an old account number sends the money to a paybill limbo. Compare against the account number on your M-KOPA welcome SMS or on the phone box.
- Call M-KOPA customer service. Give them the M-PESA transaction code, the date and time, the amount, and the account number used. They can trace the payment on the paybill side and, if it landed in the wrong account, reallocate it. Reallocation typically takes hours to a business day.
- Keep the SMS confirmation. If M-KOPA cannot reconcile it and locks you into a longer dispute, the M-PESA SMS is the primary evidence.
- Escalate if unresolved within a reasonable window. M-KOPA is CBK-licensed [Source 1] and bound by the CBK Digital Credit Providers Code of Conduct [Source 3]. Persistent lock after documented payment is a consumer complaint issue. Call CBK Consumer Protection on 0800 720 000.
What not to do
- Do not factory reset. It does not unlock the phone. It typically makes the situation worse because it wipes the M-KOPA companion app data that stores the local activation state.
- Do not try to install a "bypass" APK or an unofficial unlock. These frequently brick the phone. They are also a contract breach and can be treated as tampering.
- Do not pay a third party who claims they can unlock the phone. This is a common scam. The only legitimate unlock path is through M-KOPA after payment credit.
- Do not sell the phone before final payment. The phone is still under the M-KOPA charge until final payment. A buyer will find it re-locks under their SIM.
If the phone is locked after final payment
On completion of the financed price, the phone should permanently unlock. If it locks again after final payment:
- Verify with M-KOPA that the account is closed and settled. Ask for a settlement letter or confirmation SMS.
- Ask M-KOPA to push a final unlock signal to your specific device serial.
- If M-KOPA cannot or will not, escalate to CBK Consumer Protection on 0800 720 000. This is a service defect, not a debt event.
- Document everything. The written trail matters if the escalation goes beyond M-KOPA support.

FAQ
Why does my M-KOPA phone lock when I miss a payment?
M-KOPA sells phones on a PayGo model. The phone contains a software lock that requires periodic activation. If a scheduled payment is not received on time, the activation window expires and the phone stops working until payment is made.
How do I unlock an M-KOPA phone after paying?
The unlock code arrives by SMS after the payment is credited on the M-KOPA side. Enter the code in the M-KOPA companion app or the lock screen prompt. If the code does not arrive within a reasonable time after payment, the payment is not yet reflecting on the M-KOPA account.
My payment reflects on my M-PESA statement but the phone is still locked. What now?
Call M-KOPA customer service with the exact M-PESA confirmation code, the date and time, and the amount. The most common cause is a mismatch between the paybill or account number used on M-PESA and the account number tied to your phone. See the escalation section below.
Is M-KOPA licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya?
Yes. M-KOPA Loan Kenya Ltd was licensed by the Central Bank of Kenya on 30 January 2023 as a non-deposit-taking credit provider.
Can M-KOPA lock my phone even if I have paid the cash price already?
Not once the full financed price has been paid. If the phone locks after final payment, that is a service defect not a debt event. Call M-KOPA immediately and document the payment history.
