1. CRB listing
The clearest reason. Most CBK-licensed and bank-backed lenders will decline outright if you have an active negative CRB listing. Fix: work through the 5-step clearance process; see how to get off CRB Kenya. In the meantime, try Hustler Fund via *254#; it uses lighter checks.
2. Low M-PESA activity
Bank-backed products (M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, Timiza) score heavily on M-PESA transaction history. If your line has low volume, expect a small starting limit or a decline. Fix: use M-PESA for day-to-day activity for 3 to 6 months before applying.
3. New SIM, new phone, or new device
App lenders use device metadata and SIM age as anti-fraud signals. A SIM registered in the last 30 days, or an app being installed on a device with no prior app-lender history, will trigger a low score. Fix: use the same phone and SIM for 60 to 90 days before the application; establish M-PESA activity on it.
4. Multiple concurrent app loans
Applying to multiple apps in a short window generates CRB inquiries and, on the device side, visible sign-ups. Lenders read that as repayment stress. Fix: resolve or repay existing loans before applying elsewhere; do not spray-apply to 5 apps in one day.
5. Previous default or write-off on the same app
An old default on the app you are re-applying to is remembered for years, even after CRB clearance. Fix: contact the lender, request a re-scoring after repayment, and provide the CRB update.
6. Permissions declined
If the app requires SMS, phone, or device metadata permissions for underwriting and you decline, the score drops. Fix: install cleanly, grant the required permissions, and reapply. If you object to the permissions on privacy grounds, use a different lender that does not require them (SACCO, bank branch product, Hustler Fund).
7. Income and expense pattern signals
Lenders that see your M-PESA pattern can infer income and outgoing patterns. If the pattern shows consistent negative cash flow or heavy loan repayment share, the score drops. Fix: reduce visible dependence on prior loans; if borrowing to repay, that shows in the pattern.
What actually helps
- Clear existing CRB listings first.
- Use M-PESA daily for 60 to 90 days.
- Apply to one lender at a time.
- Start with Hustler Fund or M-Shwari and build a repayment history.
- Do not stack multiple app loans.
If still declined
Try in order:
- Hustler Fund via *254# (subsidised, lighter checks).
- SACCO emergency loan if you are a member.
- Chama or group lending.
- Employer payroll advance.
- Reconsider whether you need to borrow at all.

FAQ
Why does the app decline me if my CRB is clean?
CRB is only one input. Kenyan loan apps also score on M-PESA transaction volume, device metadata, phone-number age, prior repayment on their own product, and behavioural signals. A clean CRB is not sufficient.
How do I improve my M-PESA score?
Consistent M-PESA use over months: receiving, sending, paying bills, buying goods. Bulk one-off transfers do not help as much as steady day-to-day activity. This is why new SIMs get very low limits.
Does using multiple loan apps at once hurt my score?
Yes. Multiple concurrent inquiries and multiple outstanding loans across apps signal repayment stress. Some apps see this via CRB inquiries; others via device patterns.
