The short answer

Yes. The Tala product in Kenya is operated by Inventure Mobile Ltd, which appears in the Central Bank of Kenya register of non-deposit-taking credit providers with a licence date of 30 January 2023 [Source 1]. Tala was part of the first tranche of licensees under the original 2022 Digital Credit Providers Regulations.

Registered name vs trade name

The CBK register lists licensees by registered company name, not by trade or brand name. Tala's registered entity in Kenya is Inventure Mobile Ltd. If you search the register for "Tala" and get no result, that is not evidence the lender is unlicensed. It is evidence that you need to search for the underlying registered company name.

This is one of the recurring reasons prospective borrowers wrongly conclude a licensed lender is unlicensed. For the general playbook on register searches, see how to check if a lender is licensed in Kenya, in 2 minutes.

What being CBK-licensed means for Tala

The Business Laws (Amendment) Act No. 20 of 2024, in force 27 December 2024 [Source 2], reframed the earlier "digital credit business" as "non-deposit taking credit business" and continued CBK supervision over the pre-2024 licensees, including Tala. Practical consequences:

  • Code of Conduct compliance. The CBK Digital Credit Providers Code of Conduct prohibits debt-shaming, calling third parties in the borrower contacts, threatening violence, and misrepresenting a debt as owed to a court [Source 3].
  • Complaint route. If Tala does not resolve an issue directly, borrowers can escalate to CBK Consumer Protection on 0800 720 000, then to court.
  • Ongoing supervision. Continued licence requires continued compliance.

Tala's specific niche

Tala is a short-term unsecured cash lender: small-ticket loans, disbursed to M-PESA, repaid over days or weeks. Interest is priced as a flat fee on the disbursed amount rather than as an APR, which makes the effective rate hard to compare at a glance.

The APR caveat

Tala publishes headline daily or weekly fees but does not consistently publish a single effective APR. The short-term unsecured category as a whole in Kenya has effective APRs materially higher than headline flat-fee rates suggest, because the fee is charged over a short period. Treat the true effective APR as unverified beyond published headline rates.

The CBK licence does not require Tala to publish an APR, and does not cap the effective rate. Licensing is about consumer protection process, not price disclosure. See why CBK licensing matters if you are borrowing for the honest scoping.

Context: how many are licensed

As of the CBK July 2026 press release, 252 non-deposit taking credit providers have been licensed out of more than 800 applications received since March 2022 [Source 4]. Tala has held its licence continuously since January 2023.
