Who runs Tala in Kenya
Tala in Kenya is operated by Inventure Mobile Ltd, a company headquartered in California with a Kenyan subsidiary. The Kenyan entity is on the Central Bank of Kenya register of non-deposit-taking credit providers with a licence date of 30 January 2023, in the first tranche of licensees under the 2022 Digital Credit Providers Regulations. See our standalone licence check for Tala.
How the product works
Tala is a short-term unsecured cash lender. You download the app, complete a KYC and permissions flow, and are scored for an initial limit. Approved loans disburse to your M-PESA within minutes. Standard tenures run 21 to 30 days, with rollover available at additional cost. Repayment is via M-PESA paybill.
Tala's scoring is app-based rather than CRB-first, which is a real benefit for borrowers with a thin credit file. The trade-off is the level of phone data access the app requests: on Android, historically that has included SMS, contacts, device metadata, and installed-app lists. Tala says this data is used only for underwriting and is retained under its privacy policy; whether you are comfortable with that is a personal call.
What Tala actually costs
Tala prices credit as a flat facility fee on the disbursed amount, not as an APR. Headline fees fall roughly in the 5 to 15 percent range per loan, but that is over tenures of 21 to 30 days, which means the effective annualised rate is much higher than the headline suggests. As of 26 August 2026 we did not verify a single canonical rate card from Tala's Kenyan site because the pricing surfaces inside the authenticated app flow rather than as a static rate table. Treat any specific rate you see quoted online as unverified until you read it on your own Tala screen.
For the methodology on converting flat fees to a comparable rate, see our guide on mobile loan effective APR explained.
The privacy trade-off
Every app-based lender in Kenya sits somewhere on a spectrum between minimal permissions and full-phone access. Tala historically has been on the higher-permission end. The Kenya Data Protection Act, 2019 and the CBK Digital Credit Providers Code of Conduct together set the guardrails: data must be collected for a stated purpose, used only for that purpose, and cannot be used to contact third parties in your phone book about your debt.
The Code of Conduct explicitly prohibits contacting people in a borrower's phone contacts. If Tala or any other CBK-licensed lender does this, it is a breach. See what to do about loan app harassment for the escalation ladder.
Common complaints, and what to check
- Denied even with a clean CRB. Tala's scoring is opaque and factors in device metadata, M-PESA history, and prior Tala repayment. A clean CRB is not sufficient. There is no direct appeal.
- Approved limit is small. Initial limits often start below KES 5,000. They grow with successful repayment, not with income.
- Rollover fees compound quickly. A rollover is a new loan on top of the old one, priced at the same facility fee. Two or three rollovers can double the effective cost.
- Repayment showing not received. Almost always a paybill account-number mismatch. Recheck the paybill number and account reference in the app before contacting support.
Cheaper alternatives to try first
- Hustler Fund via *254#. The cheapest government-backed option for small loans; check limit before paying Tala's fees.
- M-Shwari via the M-PESA menu. Bank-backed by NCBA, priced at a flat facility fee per 30-day loan, often below Tala for equivalent tenure.
- KCB M-PESA via the M-PESA menu. Higher ceiling than M-Shwari for established users, priced by facility fee.
- SACCO emergency loan if you are a member with at least 6 months of savings. Rates are single-digit annualised, not monthly, so materially cheaper than any app.

Who Tala actually suits
Tala is a reasonable fit if all three are true: (1) you have been declined by M-Shwari and KCB M-PESA, typically because you have a thin credit file rather than a bad one, (2) you can repay in full inside the initial term without rolling over, and (3) you are comfortable with the app permissions. If any of the three does not hold, look elsewhere first.

FAQ
Is Tala legit in Kenya?
Yes. Tala is operated in Kenya by Inventure Mobile Ltd, which appears in the CBK register of non-deposit-taking credit providers with a licence date of 30 January 2023. Tala was in the first tranche of licensees under the CBK Digital Credit Providers Regulations, 2022.
What interest does Tala charge?
Tala prices loans as flat facility fees over short terms rather than a single APR. Effective monthly rates typically fall in the 10 to 20 percent range for short-tenure loans. Treat any specific figure as unverified until you see it on your own repayment screen; the true fee depends on tenure, product, and borrower history.
Does Tala check CRB?
Yes. As a CBK-licensed non-deposit-taking credit provider, Tala uses the Credit Reference Bureau framework both to score applicants and to report defaults. Missed repayments are typically reported to CRB within 30 to 90 days of default.
Does Tala call my contacts if I default?
No. Under the CBK Digital Credit Providers Code of Conduct, calling contacts in a borrower phone book to shame or pressure the borrower is prohibited. If you experience this from Tala or any licensed lender, complain first to the lender, then escalate to CBK Consumer Protection on 0800 720 000.
