Mogo Kenya (Mogo Auto Limited) runs on M-PESA paybill 7034211, with your loan agreement number or vehicle plate number as the account. Mogo is unusual in the lending sector because repayments do not reflect instantly; the standard reconciliation window is 1 to 4 hours, longer over weekends and public holidays. This guide covers the agreement-number versus plate-number confusion that catches new borrowers, the balance-update lag people mistake for a failed payment, the bank alternative for large amounts, the scam paybills targeting boda boda owners, and the escalation path when something genuinely went wrong.

Three checks before you panic

Run these before you assume the payment failed.

  1. Did the M-PESA SMS arrive with a 10-character code? If yes (e.g. RG7HX9BC2K), the payment is accepted by Safaricom and is on its way to Mogo. Take the screenshot of the SMS, you will need it.
  2. Does the SMS recipient name read MOGO AUTO LIMITED? That is the legitimate recipient of paybill 7034211. If the SMS shows any other name, you paid the wrong paybill. Call Safaricom on 100 and ask for a reversal.
  3. Has it been more than 4 hours since the M-PESA SMS? If less, wait. Mogo balance updates take 1 to 4 hours on weekdays during business hours, longer over weekends. The lag is normal, your payment is fine.

Agreement number vs plate number

Mogo accepts two formats as the M-PESA account number when you pay paybill 7034211:

  • Agreement number: printed on your loan contract, usually starts with a letter (e.g. M for motorbike, C for car). Recommended for car loans and longer-term asset finance because plate transfers can briefly break the routing.
  • Plate number: your motorbike or car plate (e.g. KMEX 123F), written as plain alphanumerics with no spaces, hyphens, or special characters. Recommended for Boda Boda loans because it is shorter and harder to mistype.

Using the wrong format does not lose your money. Mogo can manually post any payment to any active account using the M-PESA transaction code. But it does delay the balance update by 24 to 48 hours, longer if you cannot get through to support immediately.

Why Mogo balance does not update instantly

Unlike most M-PESA paybill recipients, Mogo does not run real-time API reconciliation. The flow is:

  1. You pay paybill 7034211 via M-PESA.
  2. Safaricom settles the funds to Mogo's NCBA collection account (Mogo Auto Limited, A/C 8368080018).
  3. NCBA pushes settlement files to Mogo on a scheduled basis: roughly every hour during business hours, less frequently overnight and on weekends.
  4. Mogo's loan management system applies the payment to your oldest outstanding invoice.
  5. Your balance updates and you can see it via *695# or the customer portal.

The full chain takes 1 to 4 hours on weekdays, 4 to 24 hours on weekends and after 6pm. Public holidays can stretch this further. The M-PESA SMS is your proof; if Mogo claims non-receipt, they can trace any payment with the transaction code.

Most common failure mode. M-PESA SMS confirmed, but Mogo balance unchanged after 4 hours. Run this:

  1. Re-check the M-PESA SMS recipient. Should read MOGO AUTO LIMITED. If not, you paid the wrong paybill, reverse and retry with 7034211.
  2. Dial *695# and check your balance. The system might already have posted it; Mogo's SMS notifications can lag the actual balance update.
  3. Email info@mogo.co.ke with: the M-PESA transaction code, the amount, the date and time, your agreement number, and the M-PESA SMS screenshot. Mogo typically responds within one business day.
  4. Call +254 768 469 112 with the same details. Phone is faster than email if you need it resolved the same day.
  5. WhatsApp the same number for asynchronous follow-up after hours.

Bank repayment alternative if M-PESA fails

If M-PESA is down or you need to repay more than KES 250,000 (the M-PESA per-transaction cap), use the Mogo bank account directly:

  • Bank: NCBA Bank
  • Branch: Upper Hill
  • Account name: Mogo Auto Limited
  • Account number: 8368080018
  • Reference: your Mogo agreement number

Bank deposits take 2 to 24 hours to reflect on the Mogo system. Use Pesalink, RTGS, or a bank-to-bank transfer with your agreement number in the narration field. Cash deposits at any NCBA branch also work.

Scam paybills targeting Mogo customers

Mogo's 7-digit paybill is unusual (most M-PESA paybills are 6 digits) which makes it a target for both look-alike scams and "this paybill changed" misinformation. The legitimate paybill is 7034211. Variants seen circulating on WhatsApp and SMS:

  • 7034212, 7034210: trailing-digit variants, no legitimate routing
  • 703421: 6-digit truncation, not a valid Mogo paybill
  • 7034221: digit reordered
  • "New Mogo paybill: XXXXXX" messages: Mogo has not changed paybills. If you receive an SMS or WhatsApp claiming Mogo has a new paybill, ignore it.

Confirm 7034211 on mogo.co.ke/faq/payments, our Mogo paybill page, or by calling +254 768 469 112 before paying. If the SMS recipient is not MOGO AUTO LIMITED, you paid wrong: call Safaricom on 100 and ask for a reversal.

Reversing a wrong Mogo payment

  1. Call Safaricom customer care on 100 (200 on postpay). The 456 self-reversal covers person-to-person sends only, not paybills.
  2. Give them the M-PESA transaction code.
  3. Safaricom contacts the business for consent before reversing.

Mogo usually agrees to release on clear errors. Safaricom does not say the original transaction fee comes back.

FAQ

What is the official Mogo Kenya paybill?

The official Mogo Kenya paybill is 7034211, owned by Mogo Auto Limited. Verified against mogo.co.ke/faq/payments. If you paid any other number, the payment did not reach Mogo and will need a reversal through Safaricom customer care on 100.

I paid 7034211 but Mogo says my balance has not updated. What now?

Mogo balance updates are not instant. Allow 1 to 4 hours for the repayment to reflect, especially outside business hours and on weekends. The M-PESA SMS proves the payment went through; the lag is on the Mogo system side. After 4 hours, call +254 768 469 112 or email info@mogo.co.ke with the M-PESA transaction code.

What account number do I use for Mogo on M-PESA: agreement number or plate number?

Either works for most products. Mogo accepts your agreement number (printed on your loan contract, usually starts with a letter) or your motorbike/car plate number (without spaces or dashes). For Boda Boda loans specifically, the plate number is the recommended account because it is shorter and harder to mistype. For car loans, the agreement number is more reliable since plate transfers and changes can cause routing issues.

I used my plate number but my balance still shows outstanding. Why?

Two common causes. (1) The plate number was entered with a space, a hyphen, or in the wrong case, which the system rejects silently and lands the payment in a Mogo suspense account. Strip everything to plain alphanumerics and retry. (2) The plate was recently transferred and Mogo has not yet updated the link to your account. Call Mogo with the M-PESA code and the agreement number; they can manually post.

Mogo M-PESA says "account number error". What does that mean?

Your account number was rejected by the Mogo system at the point of payment. Most common cause: a space, hyphen, or special character in your agreement or plate number. Mogo accepts only plain digits and letters. Retry with the cleaned value. If you still get the error, your agreement may be closed or transferred, call +254 768 469 112 to confirm.

Can I repay Mogo from a bank account if M-PESA fails?

Yes. Mogo accepts bank deposits to Mogo Auto Limited, NCBA Bank, Upper Hill branch, account number 8368080018. Use your Mogo agreement number as the reference. Bank deposits take 2 to 24 hours to reflect on the Mogo system. M-PESA paybill is faster (1 to 4 hours) for amounts up to KES 250,000 per transaction.

I missed a weekly Boda Boda invoice. Does paying via M-PESA paybill fix that automatically?

Yes, the system applies your payment to the oldest outstanding invoice first. If you missed two weekly invoices, paying the equivalent of two invoices via paybill 7034211 clears both, oldest first. Mogo does not charge a late penalty on Boda Boda within the first 7 days late, after that a small daily fee applies until cleared.

How do I check my Mogo loan balance?

Dial *695# from any phone for the Mogo USSD self-service menu. It shows your outstanding balance, next invoice due date, and payment history. You can also call +254 768 469 112 or use the Mogo Customer Portal at mogo.co.ke. Balance updates from M-PESA repayments take 1 to 4 hours to reflect, so do not panic if it shows your old balance immediately after paying.

Can I reverse a wrong Mogo payment?

Ask Safaricom customer care on 100 (200 on postpay) with the M-PESA transaction code. The 456 self-reversal only covers person-to-person sends, so it does not reach a paybill. Safaricom asks the business for consent first, and Mogo usually agrees on clear errors (duplicate payment, wrong agreement number where nothing was consumed). Safaricom does not say the original transaction fee comes back.

My SMS confirmed the payment but Mogo claims they never received it. What do I do?

Send the full M-PESA SMS screenshot (showing transaction code, amount, date, and recipient name) to info@mogo.co.ke, and call +254 768 469 112 the same day. Mogo can trace any payment to paybill 7034211 from their NCBA settlement account within minutes if you give them the transaction code. If the recipient on your SMS reads anything other than MOGO AUTO LIMITED, you paid the wrong paybill, reverse and retry.
