1. Advance-fee scam
You apply. The lender approves quickly. Just before disbursement, they ask you to send a small processing fee, insurance premium, or activation charge to a paybill or till. You send it. No loan arrives. They may ask for a second fee, then vanish.
No CBK-licensed lender charges an up-front fee to receive a loan. Fees are deducted from disbursement or added to repayment. If asked, stop and verify.
2. Impersonation of a known lender
Fake WhatsApp accounts, Facebook pages, or app clones claiming to be Tala, Branch, KCB M-PESA, or Hustler Fund. Often ask you to click a link to "update" or "claim". Fix: only use the official app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store; never install a lender via a WhatsApp APK link.
3. Fake CRB clearance agent
Someone claims they can remove your CRB listing for a fee. Every one of these is a scam. The clearance process is regulatory and does not have paid shortcuts; see how to get off CRB in Kenya.
4. Loan-to-friend scam
You receive a WhatsApp from a "friend" whose account has been hacked, asking for an M-PESA loan or Fuliza payment. Always verify via voice call, not WhatsApp, before sending.
5. Fake broker for a real bank loan
Someone claims to help you get a bank loan for a percentage fee. Banks do not use commission brokers for retail loans; there is no legitimate role for a paid third party in a standard bank loan application. Save the fee, apply directly.
6. Data-harvest fake application
A fake app or web form collects your ID, phone, and M-PESA PIN under the guise of a loan application. The PIN is then used to drain your M-PESA. Rule: no legitimate lender ever asks for your M-PESA PIN. Ever.
7. Reverse-scam: fake refund on an unpaid loan
Someone claims you overpaid a past loan and offers to "refund" you if you first pay a processing fee. Same advance-fee pattern in reverse. No.
How to spot a scam in 60 seconds
- Search the app or brand on the CBK register (paybillke CBK licence checker).
- Check that the paybill or till you are asked to pay is registered to the same company. Use paybillke paybill lookup.
- Look for the up-front-fee ask. If yes, stop.
- Look for the PIN ask. If yes, stop.
- Verify via the official Google Play or Apple App Store listing rather than a WhatsApp APK.
What to do if you have already paid

FAQ
What is the most common loan app scam in Kenya?
The advance-fee scam: the "lender" asks you to pay a processing fee, activation fee, or insurance up front before the loan is disbursed. No legitimate CBK-licensed lender charges an up-front fee to receive a loan; fees are deducted from disbursement or added to repayment.
How do I tell a fake loan app from a real one?
Check the CBK register for the operating company name. Check that the paybill or till the app asks you to pay to is registered to the same company. If either is off, it is a scam.
I paid an advance fee. Can I get it back?
File a report with Safaricom fraud (via 100 for Safaricom customers), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and the CBK Consumer Protection line 0800 720 000. Recovery is difficult; treat the payment as lost and focus on preventing the next scam.
