What Berry is

Berry is one of several app-based mobile lenders in Kenya. The product is short-tenure unsecured cash, disbursed to M-PESA on approval. Pricing is flat facility fee per loan.

Verify licence first

The first thing to do with any app-based lender that is not on the well-known regulated shortlist is to verify the licence:

  1. Open the Berry app terms and note the registered company name (not the brand).
  2. Search the CBK register of non-deposit-taking credit providers for that exact company name.
  3. If not found, do not draw. See our 2-minute licence check guide and the CBK licence checker tool.

Pricing

Berry has priced at a flat facility fee for short tenures. We did not verify a specific rate card for this review; read the in-app confirmation screen. Beware of apps whose in-app disclosed fee differs materially from what marketing suggests.

Who Berry suits

If Berry is CBK-licensed, it is one option among many; not systematically cheaper than Tala, Branch, or Zenka. If Berry is not CBK-licensed, avoid.

If something goes wrong

  1. Raise a support ticket in-app. Keep evidence.
  2. Complain to CBK Consumer Protection on 0800 720 000, citing the registered company name (not just the brand).
  3. For data-protection issues, file with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.
  4. If the lender is not on the CBK register, see what to do if an unlicensed lender takes your money.

FAQ

Is Berry licensed by CBK?

Verify directly on the CBK register of non-deposit-taking credit providers or via our CBK licence checker. As of 26 August 2026 we did not confirm Berry as an entry on the register under that brand name; the underlying registered company name (if any) may differ. Do not assume licence status from the brand alone.

What does Berry charge?

Berry has priced short-tenure app loans at a flat facility fee, typically in the low-double-digit percent per loan range for a 14 to 30 day term. Specific figures are not verified in this review; read the in-app confirmation before drawing.

Does Berry check CRB?

App-based lenders in Kenya generally use CRB signal both to underwrite and to report defaults. Confirm inside the Berry terms; if the lender is not CBK-licensed, its standing to CRB-list you is questionable.
