The default mechanic in one paragraph
Sun King EasyBuy sells solar home systems on a pay-as-you-go instalment structure. The unit contains an activation control (typically software-based via the small control box or via a scratch-code activation system). Each scheduled payment renews the activation window. Miss a payment and the window expires and the unit stops working (lights, phone charging, TV where included) until payment is made. On completion of the full financed price the unit unlocks permanently.
This is the standard Kenyan PayGo mechanic and it is structurally identical to M-KOPA's solar and phone products and to Safaricom's Lipa Mdogo Mdogo phone product. Where Lipa Mdogo Mdogo publishes a specific day-4 lock trigger [Source 3], Sun King does not, as far as we can verify, publish an equivalent granular timing for its Kenyan EasyBuy consumer document. Ask in writing at point of sale.
The recovery ladder in practice
Based on the PayGo product model and observed field practice, the standard EasyBuy escalation is:
- Payment reminder SMS in the days leading up to and after the scheduled instalment date.
- Unit lock at the next activation window expiry after the missed payment. The lights and USB charging stop. The unit is otherwise physically intact but non-functional.
- Continued SMS and call contact to prompt payment. Sun King and its agents typically continue to reach out.
- Extended non-payment can result in the account being marked delinquent. Whether this triggers CRB reporting depends on Sun King's specific arrangements (not directly through CBK-supervised CRB reporting pathways for non-registered entities).
- Physical recovery is not publicly documented in a granular Sun King consumer document for Kenya. Where PayGo solar recovery occurs, it typically requires the customer to be present and the door to be answered.
The critical difference from boda-boda repossession is that the unit lives in the household's premises. There is no GPS tracker. There is no on-route interception. Sun King and its agents cannot forcibly enter a home to remove property under civil-debt authority. If a recovery agent arrives, the household is not obliged to hand over the unit without an itemised written account and a clear legal basis.
If you have paid but the unit is still locked
The most common EasyBuy support issue is a payment sent to the wrong account number, or a payment that has not reflected on the Sun King side despite showing as successful on the M-PESA statement. The workflow:
- Confirm the payment on your M-PESA statement. Note the transaction code, the amount, the paybill and account number used, and the date and time.
- Check the account number. Cross-check against the account number on the Sun King welcome document or the control-box label. Wrong-account payments are the single largest cause of "paid but still locked."
- Contact Sun King customer service. Provide the M-PESA transaction code, date, time, amount, and account number. Sun King can trace the payment on the paybill side and, if it landed in the wrong account, reallocate it.
- Keep the M-PESA SMS. Evidence for any longer dispute.
- Escalate if unresolved. See the escalation section below.
What changes because Sun King is not on the CBK register
Two material changes for consumer protection:
- The CBK Digital Credit Providers Code of Conduct [Source 4] applies to CBK-licensed credit providers. Non-registered entities are not directly supervised by CBK under that Code. Other Kenyan laws still apply.
- The complaint route is different. CBK Consumer Protection on 0800 720 000 is designed for complaints about licensed entities. Complaints about non-registered entities carrying on credit business route via a different Act-perimeter concern.
Complaint escalation for a Sun King issue
- Sun King customer service in writing. First step. Keep the trail.
- COFEK (Consumer Federation of Kenya). Product quality, unfair terms, warranty complaints.
- Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). If the solar unit fails to meet published performance specifications.
- Competition Authority of Kenya. Unfair contract terms.
- Small Claims Court. Contract disputes up to KES 1 million.
- DCI Cybercrime. Genuine fraud only.
- Office of the Data Protection Commissioner. If personal data was misused during collections.
- CBK Consumer Protection (0800 720 000). For entities carrying on non-deposit-taking credit business without appearing on the CBK register: that is itself an Act-perimeter concern.

If you are genuinely stuck
- Contact Sun King customer service. Explain the situation. Ask about surrender terms.
- Ask for the current settlement figure and any early-settlement discount. If a family member can help you clear the balance, that unlocks the unit permanently.
- If surrender is offered, get the surrender terms in writing. What happens to the deposit and the instalments already paid, what happens to the physical unit, whether there is any residual claim.
- Do not try to bypass the lock. Third-party override attempts often disable the unit permanently and destroy any warranty or resale value.
- Read the wider playbook. Our what to do if you cannot pay this month guide covers negotiation with any lender.
Warranty and payment: separate tracks
A common trap: the panel or the battery fails during the financing term and the customer stops paying, reasoning that the unit is not delivering. That is almost always the wrong move. Warranty and payment are separate contractual tracks. Stopping payment triggers the default sequence (unit lock, escalation, potential negative report), and does not accelerate the warranty claim. The right sequence is:
- Log the warranty claim with Sun King in writing. Note date, unit serial, symptom.
- Keep paying scheduled instalments while the warranty claim is processed.
- If Sun King denies or delays the warranty claim unreasonably, escalate to COFEK and to KEBS (for performance specification failures).
- Where warranty resolution is materially delayed, some lenders will pause the schedule; ask in writing.

Where a specific Sun King process is not cited in this article, it is because Sun King does not publish it in a granular public Kenyan consumer-terms document as of the verification date. FAQ
What happens if I miss a Sun King EasyBuy payment?
The unit stops working when the activation window expires. This is the standard PayGo mechanic. The specific number of hours or days between missed payment and lock is not published in a public Kenyan consumer document, so ask at point of sale.
Will Sun King repossess my solar system?
Not publicly documented in a granular consumer-terms document. In practice, PayGo solar recovery relies primarily on the software lock and follow-up contact. Physical repossession is a separate question and, where it happens, requires the borrower to be present or the door to be answered.
Is Sun King in the CBK non-deposit-taking credit business register?
As of the CBK April 2026 published register, Sun King (Greenlight Planet) is not listed. This is a factual public-record observation. It changes what consumer-protection routes apply.
Can Sun King list me on CRB for a defaulted EasyBuy unit?
CBK-licensed credit providers report directly to the Credit Reference Bureaus. Non-CBK-registered entities do not have the same direct reporting pathway. Whether Sun King lists defaulters depends on any commercial or agency arrangements. Ask in writing.
What do I do if the panel or battery fails during the financing term?
Warranty issues and payment issues are separate. Even if the unit fails under warranty you generally must keep paying scheduled instalments while the warranty claim is processed. Get the warranty terms and the claim process in writing before signing.
