How the effective APR is computed
The calculator solves for the daily internal rate of return that makes the present value of the daily payment stream equal the financed principal. In plain English: what constant daily interest rate would you need for a KES (P minus D) loan to be exactly paid off by the daily payments over the tenure?
The equation being solved is:
(P - D) = sum from t=1 to n of d / (1 + r_daily)^t where P = cash price (financed price) D = deposit d = daily payment n = tenure in days r_daily = daily interest rate (unknown, being solved for)
We solve numerically by bisection over r_daily in the range [0, 1], stopping when the present value is within KES 0.01 of the principal. Iterations are capped at 100. The daily rate is then annualised as effective annual rate = (1 + r_daily)^365 - 1.
Why the multiple is not the interest rate
A 2.11x multiple over cash price does not mean 111% interest. Interest is time-sensitive, and paying KES 100 today is not the same as paying KES 100 in a year. The effective annual rate answers "what constant rate would produce this payment stream?" and it is the right number to compare against a bank asset-finance loan or a SACCO loan.
One caveat, particularly relevant to Lipa Mdogo Mdogo: on the Itel A60 tier, the daily payment includes both a device instalment and a compulsory airtime and data bundle. Splitting those two components out (KES 45 device + KES 55 bundle, per Safaricom's own 2024 T&Cs) reveals that the credit portion is nearly free, and the multiple is really measuring device credit plus prepaid connectivity.
