Teens on M-PESA Go can now save into Ziidi MMF from KES 100. Same money-market rate as adults, same open-ended fund, same 24-hour withdrawal. The opt-in lives on *334# under Financial services → ZIIDI, and the M-PESA app path is coming. This is the first time a Safaricom minor account has had a real interest-earning option.

What Ziidi is

Ziidi is Safaricom’s in-app money-market fund distribution, launched in early 2025. Underlying funds are managed by regulated Kenyan asset managers; Safaricom is the distribution layer. Two live products:

  • Ziidi MMFa conventional interest-bearing money-market fund.
  • Ziidi ShariahShariah-compliant equivalent (no interest, profit-share model).

For most families the choice is Ziidi MMF unless the household is Shariah-observant.

Opt-in flow, step by step

  1. On the teen’s phone, dial *334#.
  2. Select Financial services.
  3. Select ZIIDI.
  4. Select ZIIDI MMF (or Ziidi Shariah).
  5. Read and accept the Ziidi terms and conditions.
  6. Enter the teen’s M-PESA Go PIN.
  7. Confirmation SMS lands. Ziidi is now visible on the teen’s M-PESA app / STK / *334# menus.

The M-PESA app path is on Safaricom’s public roadmap (“Coming soon = access to ZIIDI via M-PESA APP!”), but is not live at the time of writing.

Depositing to Ziidi from M-PESA Go

  1. Dial *334# → Financial services → ZIIDI → ZIIDI MMF.
  2. Select Deposit.
  3. Enter the KES amount (minimum 100).
  4. Confirm with the teen’s M-PESA PIN.
  5. Two SMS: one debiting M-PESA Go, one crediting Ziidi. The teen’s Ziidi balance updates.

Withdrawing from Ziidi back to M-PESA Go

The teen dials *334# → Financial services → ZIIDI → ZIIDI MMF → Withdraw. Money returns to the M-PESA Go wallet, usually within 24 hours (settles in one business day; the fund manager needs to sell units). From there, the teen can send or spend as normal.

What the parent sees

The parent sees the deposit and the withdrawal in the teen’s mini-statement (the last-five view on *334# → Manage Junior Account → View Junior Account Info). Each shows as a transaction to or from the Ziidi paybill number. The Ziidi balance itself is not visible in the parent view: the teen has to check that.

This design is intentional: Safaricom treats Ziidi as the teen’s money, held under the teen’s KYC (which is technically the parent’s KYC as their guardian). The parent has full audit trail via M-PESA Go movements, but does not directly control the Ziidi position.

What to expect on returns

Kenyan MMF yields have been running between 8 and 12% p.a. through 2026, tracking Central Bank of Kenya rate decisions and interbank rates. On KES 5,000 that is roughly KES 400 to 600 a year of interest: modest cash, but the point at teen ages is not the money, it is the habit.

Why bother, for a 13-year-old?

A few reasons families we speak with give:

  • Compounding awareness lands early: a real graph beats a lecture.
  • Teaches the difference between checking-account money (M-PESA Go wallet) and invested money (Ziidi).
  • Introduces the idea that idle balance is a choice.
  • By the time the teen turns 18 and inherits M-Shwari and KCB M-PESA options, the concept of a return has been felt, not just described.

What to think about first

  • Return is not guaranteed. MMF yields fluctuate; capital risk is low but not zero.
  • Withdrawal is not instant. Withdrawals settle in 24 hours. Not a place for emergency money.
  • Tax. Withholding tax on MMF interest is 15% at source. The reported yield is usually gross.
  • Shariah-observant families: use Ziidi Shariah, not Ziidi MMF, and read that fund’s specific terms.

Frequently asked

Can a teen on M-PESA Go really invest?

Yes, Safaricom opened Ziidi MMF to M-PESA Go accounts. The teen can deposit as little as KES 100 and earn the same money-market interest rate as adults.

What is Ziidi?

A collection of money-market funds distributed via Safaricom. The teen picks Ziidi MMF (or Ziidi Shariah for interest-free options), deposits from KES 100, and earns a rate typically in the 8 to 12% p.a. range depending on CBK signal.

Is the money locked?

No. Ziidi is an open-ended MMF. Withdrawals settle back to the M-PESA Go wallet, usually within 24 hours.

Can the parent see Ziidi deposits?

Yes: deposits show in the teen’s mini-statement (visible to the parent) as an outbound transaction to the Ziidi paybill. The invested balance itself is on the Ziidi ledger, not the M-PESA balance.
