M-PESA Go is Safaricom’s wallet for children. A parent opens the account on behalf of a minor aged 8 to 17, and the teen gets their own M-PESA number, PIN and mini-app. The teen can send money, pay paybills and tills, buy airtime and opt into Ziidi to save. They cannot withdraw cash, take loans, or pay anything gambling-related. The parent sets daily limits and can flip every service on or off from the parent M-PESA app or by dialling *334#.

What M-PESA Go actually is

M-PESA Go is a supplementary wallet that runs on a minor’s own Safaricom line but legally sits under the parent’s M-PESA profile. The teen holds the SIM and transacts independently, but Safaricom keeps the parent as the registered owner of the line until the teen turns 18. That is the whole design: the child learns the moves, the parent keeps the accountability.

Everything a teen can and cannot do is defined in the M-PESA Go Terms and Conditions (last updated 21 May 2025) and Safaricom’s M-PESA Go FAQ (last updated 29 July 2025). Where the T&C and the marketing FAQ disagree on age (T&C says 8+; FAQ says 10+), the T&C is the binding number.

How to register

Three channels, all documented on Safaricom’s FAQ:

  1. M-PESA app (fastest). Log in on the parent phone → Financial Services → M-PESA GO → enter your M-PESA PIN. Add the teen’s number, fill in the KYC form (name, DOB, gender), upload the birth certificate or passport, submit.
  2. Web portal. Go to safaricom.com/mpesa-go, enter your mobile and ID, verify the OTP, pick the line to convert, upload the teen’s document, submit.
  3. Safaricom shop. Take your ID or passport and a clear copy of the teen’s birth certificate or passport. Staff run an internal registration for lines not yet on M-PESA.

You can skip the document upload at registration, but Safaricom gives you 30 days to upload it. Before the birth certificate is on file, the teen cannot transact: the account returns “The status of the M-PESA GO account does not allow it to transact”.

Parent controls

Every control lives inside *334# → My Account → Manage Junior Account, with the same tree mirrored in the parent’s M-PESA app. Four sub-menus:

  • Manage services. Enable or disable Send Money, Buy Airtime and Lipa na M-PESA independently.
  • Manage Junior Relationships. Add another child, remove one, or view all the minor accounts linked to your profile.
  • View Junior Account Info. Balance and last-five-transaction mini statement, per child.
  • Daily transaction limits. Set, change or delete a spending ceiling per child, per day.

Read the depth on M-PESA Go parent controls.

Limits

The T&C says “the current transactional limits shall be applicable to the Account in addition to any limits set by the Parent or Guardian.” In practice that means the standard M-PESA ceiling: KES 250,000 per transaction, KES 500,000 per day, KES 500,000 wallet balance: applies as the outer wall, and whatever the parent sets applies as the inner wall. For a 12-year-old with pocket money, that inner wall is the one that matters. See the numbers on M-PESA Go limits and charges.

Fees

Standard M-PESA tariffs. Sending KES 100 costs the same from a teen’s M-PESA Go as from an adult’s M-PESA. Receiving money and buying airtime are free. Lipa na M-PESA (paybill and till) is free for the customer. There is no monthly fee for opening or holding an M-PESA Go account, and the account earns no interest on its balance.

When the teen turns 18

Both parent and teen walk into any Safaricom retail shop with the teen’s new National ID. Safaricom transfers ownership of the SIM to the teen, removes the M-PESA Go restrictions, and the number becomes a standard adult M-PESA account. Fuliza, M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA and cash withdrawal all switch on. Detail on turning 18 on M-PESA Go.

Common problems and fixes

  • “The status of the M-PESA GO account does not allow it to transact.” The birth certificate has not been uploaded yet. Open the parent app → M-PESA GO → tap the notification → upload.
  • Teen can’t pay a paybill. Lipa na M-PESA has been disabled by the parent. Enable it under Manage Services.
  • Teen can’t send money. Same: Send Money is disabled, or the per-day cap has been hit.
  • Teen gets a betting-paybill rejection. Working as intended. All gambling paybills are permanently blocked; the parent cannot switch that off.

Teen saving with Ziidi

Safaricom quietly opened Ziidi MMF to M-PESA Go in 2025. A teen can save from KES 100 and earn a competitive money-market rate. The flow lives on *334# under Financial services → ZIIDI. Detail on Ziidi for teens.

Support

GSM issues: dial 100 or 200. M-PESA issues: dial 234. For a send to the wrong number, forward the original M-PESA SMS to 456 within 24 hours. SIM swaps, or any change to the M-PESA Go account, require the parent: Safaricom will not act on a teen’s request alone.

Frequently asked

What is M-PESA Go?

M-PESA Go is a Safaricom sub-account opened by a parent or guardian on behalf of a minor aged 8 to 17. The teen gets their own M-PESA number, PIN and mini-app. The parent controls services, limits and can view balances and transactions.

What age qualifies for M-PESA Go?

The M-PESA Go Terms and Conditions cover minors aged 8 to 17. Safaricom’s consumer FAQ markets the product to the 10-to-17 bracket, but the legal minimum on the T&C is 8. The account converts to a full M-PESA account when the teen turns 18.

How many M-PESA Go accounts can one parent open?

Up to four (4) minor accounts under a single parent M-PESA profile.

Can an M-PESA Go account withdraw cash at an agent?

No. Cash deposit and cash withdrawal are blocked. Money enters the M-PESA Go wallet only through Send Money from another M-PESA user (usually the parent).

Can a teen on M-PESA Go take a Fuliza overdraft or an M-Shwari loan?

No. All credit products (Fuliza, M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA) are blocked. The account is strictly prepaid.

Can teens pay betting sites with M-PESA Go?

No. Payments to all betting and gambling paybills are blocked. Payments to political parties are also blocked.

What is the fastest way to sign up?

Open the M-PESA app on the parent phone, go to Financial Services, tap M-PESA GO, enter the teen’s number, upload their birth certificate or passport, enter your M-PESA PIN. Done in about five minutes. See our step-by-step registration guide.

What happens when my teen turns 18?

Both parent and teen visit any Safaricom shop with the teen’s new National ID. Safaricom transfers ownership of the SIM to the teen, removes M-PESA Go restrictions, and the number becomes a standard adult M-PESA account.
