Your M-PESA statement is a record of every transaction you've made — useful for visa applications, loan applications, business accounting, tax filing, or just keeping track of where your money went. Safaricom offers five different ways to get it, each with different period coverage, format, and fee. This guide walks through all five and explains which to use for which scenario.
Method 1 — M-PESA app (instant PDF)
- Open the M-PESA app and log in.
- Tap the "Statements" or "Transaction History" option.
- Choose the period (last 7 days, last 30 days, last 3 months, or custom range).
- Tap "Download" or "Email Statement".
- The statement is generated as a PDF, password-protected with your ID number or DOB.
Pros: Instant, free, password-protected PDF. Best for periods up to 6 months.
Cons: Limited to recent periods on most app versions. For older statements (12+ months), email request is the route.
Method 2 — USSD *334# (no app needed)
- Dial
*334#from your registered Safaricom line. - Select "My Account" → "M-PESA Statement".
- Choose period (mini-statement showing last 5 transactions, or full statement for a date range).
- Choose delivery: SMS (mini) or Email (full).
- For email: enter or confirm your email address.
- Confirm with M-PESA PIN.
Pros: Works on any phone. No app required. Email statements cover up to 5 years.
Cons: Email statement isn't instant — typically arrives within 5 minutes to 2 hours. Mini-statement (SMS) shows only 5 most recent transactions.
Method 3 — SMS request to 456
Send the SMS "STMT" to 456:
- You'll receive a reply asking for confirmation
- Confirm and the statement is generated, sent to your registered email
- Period defaults to last 30 days; you can specify in subsequent SMS
Pros: Works without USSD or app, useful when other channels are down.
Cons: Email is required (you must have one registered with M-PESA). Less flexible on date ranges.
Method 4 — Email request to safaricare@safaricom.co.ke
For older statements (1-5 years) or specific date ranges, email Safaricom directly:
- From: your registered email address (the one linked to your M-PESA account)
- To: safaricare@safaricom.co.ke
- Subject: "M-PESA Statement Request — [your phone number]"
- Body: full name, ID number, M-PESA-registered phone, the period you need (e.g., "01 January 2024 to 31 December 2024")
- Attach: scanned ID copy
Safaricom processes email requests within 1-3 business days. The statement comes as a password-protected PDF. Best route for very old transactions or when you need a specific date range that the app doesn't expose.
Method 5 — Visit a Safaricom shop
For statements going back beyond 5 years, complex situations (legal disputes, fraud investigations), or when you can't access digital channels:
- Visit any Safaricom shop with your original National ID
- Request a statement for the period you need
- The shop verifies identity and pulls the statement
- Statement is printed or emailed to you
Free for personal use. Bring your phone in case they need to send an authentication SMS. Statements older than 7 years require special escalation and a fee.
What does the M-PESA statement contain?
An M-PESA PDF statement shows:
- Header: your name, ID, phone number, period
- Opening balance at the start of the period
- Every transaction in chronological order: date, time, transaction type, amount, fee, recipient/sender, balance after
- Transaction codes for each entry — useful for verification
- Total credit, total debit, total fees for the period
- Closing balance at end of period
The PDF is password-protected. Default password is your ID number, or sometimes your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. The app or email confirmation tells you which.
Common use cases for M-PESA statements
Visa applications
Most Western embassies accept M-PESA statements as proof of financial means in Kenyan visa applications. Schengen, UK, US, Canada, Australia — all accept M-PESA statements alongside bank statements. Best practice: get statements for the last 3-6 months, plus a current balance certificate.
Loan applications
Most Kenyan lenders (banks, SACCOs, microfinance, even some digital lenders) accept M-PESA statements as evidence of cash flow. Particularly useful if you don't have formal employment or a payslip. Statement should cover the last 3-6 months minimum.
Business accounting
Small businesses using M-PESA paybill or pochi for receipts use monthly statements for bookkeeping. Most accounting software (QuickBooks, Zoho Books) can import M-PESA statement PDFs.
Tax filing
For sole traders and small businesses filing iTax returns, M-PESA statements are supporting documents for income declared. Save them with other tax records.
Disputes and reversals
If you're disputing a transaction or requesting a reversal, the statement is evidence. See our M-PESA reversal guide.
Period limits at a glance

| SMS to 456 | 30 days default, expandable | 5-30 min | Free |

Security and privacy
- Statements are password-protected — don't share the password with the PDF
- Don't email statements to third parties unless they specifically need them
- For visa applications, embassies usually accept the password-protected PDF; share the password securely (not in the same email)
- Be wary of anyone asking for your full statement "for verification" — common phishing pattern
Common issues
- "No transactions in this period" error. Verify the date range — entered in the wrong format (DDMMYYYY vs YYYY-MM-DD) is a common cause.
- PDF won't open. Use Adobe Reader or any standard PDF reader. Mobile previews sometimes choke on the password — open in Drive or download the file first.
- Forgotten password. Default is usually your ID number. If that fails, try DDMMYYYY format of your DOB. Last resort: request a fresh statement from *334#, which generates a new password.
- Email statement doesn't arrive. Check spam. Confirm your registered email address via *334# → My Account → Email. Update if needed.
