Most M-PESA top-ups happen at agents — the green-branded shops that take your cash and credit your M-PESA balance. But agents charge a deposit fee, can run out of e-float, and aren't always nearby. There are at least five legitimate ways to top up M-PESA without setting foot in an agent. This guide covers each method, the fees, and when each makes sense.

Method 1 — Bank-to-M-PESA pull (most common)

Every major Kenyan bank lets you push money from your bank account directly to M-PESA. The flow varies slightly by bank but the principle is identical:

KCB

  1. Open KCB Mobile app or dial *522#
  2. Send Money → To M-PESA → enter Safaricom phone
  3. Enter amount, confirm with PIN
  4. Funds reflect in M-PESA within minutes

Equity

  1. Open Equity Mobile or dial *247#
  2. Send Money → To Mobile → enter Safaricom phone
  3. Enter amount, confirm

Co-op

  1. Open MCo-opCash or dial *667#
  2. Send to M-PESA → enter recipient
  3. Enter amount, confirm

Other banks

Stanbic, NCBA, Standard Chartered, Absa, DTB, I&M, and most other banks all support Send-to-M-PESA from their respective apps or USSD codes. Check the bank's app or call their customer service for the exact menu path.

Fees

Each bank charges per its own bank-to-M-PESA tariff. Typical 2026 ranges:

  • KES 30-50 for amounts under KES 5,000
  • KES 50-100 for KES 5,000-50,000
  • KES 100-150 for KES 50,000-250,000

Compare to agent deposit fees — bank pull is competitive or cheaper for most amounts, plus eliminates the trip to the agent.

Method 2 — ATM cardless deposit

Several Kenyan banks offer cardless cash deposit at their ATMs that credits directly to M-PESA:

  • Equity ATMs: Insert cash, enter Safaricom phone number, confirm. Funds appear in M-PESA within minutes.
  • KCB ATMs: Cardless deposit option in the menu, enter the M-PESA phone number, deposit cash.
  • Some Co-op and NCBA ATMs: Similar function, less widespread.

Useful when you have cash but no bank account, or when an agent isn't available. Fee: typically KES 25-50 per deposit.

Method 3 — M-PESA Global (from abroad)

Diaspora Kenyans can send funds to a Kenyan M-PESA account via M-PESA Global:

  • Use a remittance partner (PayPal, Wise, WorldRemit, Sendwave, Western Union, MoneyGram)
  • Send to a Safaricom phone number — the funds land in M-PESA balance
  • Settlement: minutes to hours depending on the remittance partner

Fees vary by partner. Wise and Sendwave are typically cheapest. Western Union is more expensive but has the widest physical pickup network on the sender side.

Method 4 — Pochi to M-PESA sweep (for sellers)

If you receive payments via Pochi la Biashara (the personal till for individual sellers), you can sweep the Pochi balance to your main M-PESA balance:

  1. Open M-PESA → Pochi la Biashara
  2. Select "Withdraw to M-PESA" or similar option
  3. Enter amount, confirm with PIN
  4. Pochi balance moves to your main M-PESA

Free, instant. Useful for traders who want to combine Pochi receipts with personal M-PESA balance for a larger transaction.

Method 5 — Direct bank cash deposit + Send to M-PESA

For amounts above KES 250,000 (the M-PESA per-transaction limit) or when you don't have an existing bank balance:

  1. Walk into any branch of your bank
  2. Deposit cash to your account
  3. Use the bank's app to immediately send to M-PESA

The cash goes to your bank balance instantly (CBK rules require same-day credit on cash deposits). You then send any amount up to KES 250,000 per transaction to M-PESA. For larger amounts, split into multiple sends across multiple days (subject to your daily M-PESA limit).

Note: M-PESA agent deposits are typically free or very low-fee (Safaricom waives deposit fees up to KES 250,000). The non-agent methods incur small fees but trade-off against agent inconvenience.

When to choose each method

  • Daily top-up from salary or savings → bank pull
  • Have cash, no agent nearby → ATM cardless deposit
  • Diaspora supporting family → M-PESA Global via Sendwave / Wise
  • Mama mboga / online seller wanting to consolidate balance → Pochi sweep
  • Large business transaction → branch deposit + send to M-PESA

M-PESA balance limits

Regardless of how you deposit:

  • Maximum M-PESA balance: KES 500,000 at any one time
  • Maximum per-transaction send: KES 250,000
  • Daily transaction limit: KES 500,000 for fully verified accounts

If you're depositing amounts that would push you over KES 500,000 balance, the deposit is capped or rejected. Push some balance out first (pay a bill, send to bank, withdraw) before depositing more.

Security tips

  1. Always confirm the recipient phone number before pushing from bank to M-PESA
  2. Don't respond to SMS or calls claiming to be Safaricom asking for your PIN
  3. Bank apps push transaction confirmations — read them carefully before approving
  4. For diaspora top-ups, use only well-known remittance services (Wise, WorldRemit, Sendwave, Western Union, MoneyGram)
