M-PESA Go Not Working 2026: Every Common Error and the Fix

A rescue list for the errors families hit most on M-PESA Go: locked PINs, unlinked accounts, expired document window, blocked paybills, and hit daily limits.

M-PESA Go failures usually fall into one of six buckets: missing document, parent-toggled-off service, hit daily limit, blocked category (betting or political), unlinked parent profile, or a locked PIN. Ninety percent of tickets we see resolve inside the parent M-PESA app.

Error 1: “The status of the M-PESA GO account does not allow it to transact”

The parent skipped the birth-certificate upload during registration, or the 30-day grace window expired.

Fix (M-PESA app):

  1. Open the M-PESA app on the parent phone → M-PESA GO mini-app.
  2. Tap the notification at the top-right (labelled with the teen’s name).
  3. Upload the birth certificate or passport photo.
  4. Enter your parent M-PESA PIN.
  5. The teen can transact within minutes.

Fix (web portal): Go to safaricom.com/mpesa-go → OTP in → pick the line marked “Awaiting Teen Document Upload” → Upload Now.

Error 2: Paybill declined at authorisation

Two independent causes. Isolate before spending time on the wrong one.

  1. Test with a safe paybilltry paying KES 10 to KPLC (888880) or to a school paybill. If that works, the block is on the paybill itself. If it also fails, Lipa na M-PESA is disabled at the parent level.
  2. If the paybill test succeeds, the original paybill is on the block-list. Betting brands (Betika 290290, SportPesa 955100, etc.) are permanently blocked. There is no workaround: the parent cannot enable them.
  3. If both fail, enable Lipa na M-PESA: dial *334# on the parent’s line → My Account → Manage Junior Account → Manage services → Lipa na M-PESA → Enable.

Error 3: Send Money not working

Three checks in order:

  1. Send Money is enabled at parent level (*334# path above).
  2. Daily transaction limit not yet hit: check via View Junior Account Info → Mini statement.
  3. Recipient number is not on M-PESA (rare, but the transaction shows a different failure). Confirm the number is Safaricom or has cross-network M-PESA registration.

Error 4: Daily limit exceeded

Reset options:

  • Wait for midnight EAT. Every parent-set limit and every Safaricom outer ceiling resets at 00:00 East Africa Time.
  • Raise the limit. *334# → My Account → Manage Junior Account → Daily transaction limits → Change. Confirm with your PIN.
  • Delete the limit entirely if the teen is 17 and about to turn 18.

Error 5: Teen’s PIN locked

M-PESA locks after three wrong PIN entries. Reset options:

  1. Dial 100 or 234 from the teen’s line, choose PIN reset, answer the security questions.
  2. Visit any Safaricom shop with the parent’s national ID. The parent authorises the reset; the teen picks a new PIN.

Neither Safaricom nor a shop will reset a teen’s PIN without the parent involved.

Happens when M-PESA Go was activated at a shop before the parent linked it. Fix:

  1. Dial *334# on the parent phone.
  2. My Account → Manage Junior Account → Manage Junior Account Relationship → Add Junior Account.
  3. Enter the teen’s Safaricom number.
  4. Enter the teen’s date of birth.
  5. Confirm and enter your parent M-PESA PIN.

The account shows up on the parent’s Junior Account List within 5 minutes.

If the teen’s SIM is lost

The parent walks into any Safaricom shop with their ID and the child’s birth certificate. Safaricom blocks the old SIM, issues a replacement, and re-links the M-PESA Go wallet. The balance is safe: it lives on Safaricom’s side, not on the SIM. Cost: the standard SIM swap fee.

Reversing a mistaken transaction

Safaricom's M-PESA Reversal page gives one self-service route: the sender or the recipient forwards the original M-PESA confirmation SMS to 456 within 24 hours of the transaction. It works only while the receiving number still has the money. If that fails, call Safaricom customer care on 100 (prepay) or200 (postpay).

Full flow on the M-PESA reversal hub.

When to escalate

If none of the above resolves within 24 hours, escalate:

  • M-PESA support: dial 234 from the parent line.
  • GSM support: dial 100 or 200.
  • Twitter: @SafaricomPLC (fast on visible complaints).
  • Facebook: Safaricom PLC (fast).
  • Any Safaricom retail shop with the parent’s ID + child’s birth certificate.

Frequently asked

My teen’s M-PESA Go says “The status of the M-PESA GO account does not allow it to transact”. What now?

The birth certificate or passport was not uploaded at registration, or the 30-day upload window has expired. Open the parent M-PESA app → M-PESA GO → tap the notification labelled with the teen’s name → upload the document → enter PIN.

The teen can’t pay a paybill. Is it broken?

Two likely causes. First, the parent has disabled Lipa na M-PESA. Second, the paybill belongs to a betting company or a political party: permanently blocked at product level. Try a known-good paybill (a school or utility) to isolate.

Daily limit exceeded even though the teen hasn’t spent much. Why?

The parent-set daily limit is lower than the transaction. Raise it in *334# → Manage Junior Account → Daily transaction limits, or wait for the midnight EAT reset.

Teen locked their PIN. How do we reset?

Dial 100 or 234 from the teen’s line and follow the PIN reset flow, or visit any Safaricom shop with the parent’s ID. Safaricom requires the parent to authorise any M-PESA Go PIN reset.
