To register a teen for M-PESA Go, open the M-PESA app on the parent phone, tap Financial Services, then M-PESA GO. Enter your M-PESA PIN, type in the teen’s Safaricom number, fill in name / DOB / gender, upload a birth certificate or passport, submit with your PIN again. Total time: about five minutes.

Three registration paths

PathBest forTime
M-PESA appAny parent already using the M-PESA app~5 min
Web portal safaricom.com/mpesa-goParents on desktop, or when the app is glitching~7 min
Safaricom shopTeen’s line not yet on M-PESA, or you need an in-person walkthrough20 to 45 min

Path 1: Register in the M-PESA app

  1. Open the M-PESA app on the parent phone. Log in.
  2. Tap Financial Services in the bottom bar.
  3. Tap the M-PESA GO mini-app tile.
  4. Enter your parent M-PESA PIN.
  5. On the “Register a teen” screen, type the teen’s Safaricom number.
  6. Fill the KYC form: teen’s legal name, date of birth, gender.
  7. Upload the teen’s birth certificate or passport (photo of the physical document is fine).
  8. Enter your M-PESA PIN once more, tap Submit.
  9. Both phones receive a confirmation SMS. The teen’s M-PESA Go is live.

Path 2: Register on the web portal

  1. Go to safaricom.com/mpesa-go in any browser.
  2. Enter your mobile number and your ID or passport number.
  3. Enter the OTP that Safaricom SMSes to your phone.
  4. The portal lists all Safaricom lines registered under your ID. Pick the one to convert to M-PESA Go.
  5. Enter the teen’s name, date of birth, nationality and gender.
  6. Upload the birth certificate or passport, submit.
  7. The portal shows a “Successful registration” banner and Safaricom SMSes both phones.

Path 3: Register at a Safaricom shop

Only necessary if the teen’s line is not yet registered on M-PESA, or if you want an in-person walkthrough. Take:

  • Your Kenyan ID or passport.
  • A clear copy of the teen’s birth certificate or passport.
  • The teen’s Safaricom SIM (either in the phone or as a spare SIM).

Ask for M-PESA Go registration at the customer-care desk. Staff run an internal registration flow and hand back the SIM already provisioned. You do not need to bring the teen with you.

If you skip the document upload

Safaricom lets you defer the birth certificate upload during registration: the account is created, but the teen sees “The transaction was unsuccessful. The status of the M-PESA GO account does not allow it to transact” on any attempt. You have 30 days to complete the upload.

To finish later on the app:

  1. Open the M-PESA app → M-PESA GO mini-app.
  2. On the homepage, tap the notification at the top-right (labelled with the teen’s name).
  3. The app opens the upload screen. Add the document.
  4. Enter your M-PESA PIN. The teen can transact within minutes.

To finish on the web portal:

  1. Open safaricom.com/mpesa-go.
  2. Enter your mobile and ID, verify the OTP.
  3. Pick the number labelled Awaiting Teen Document Upload.
  4. Tap Upload Now, choose birth certificate or passport, upload, finish.

Linking a teen’s account to your parent profile

If the teen’s M-PESA Go was registered at a shop before yours was, you may need to pair them yourself. Dial *334# → My Account → Manage Junior Account → Manage Junior Account Relationship → Add Junior Account. Enter the teen’s phone number, their date of birth, confirm, then your M-PESA PIN.

Check the account is on your profile

Two ways:

  • M-PESA app → M-PESA GO mini-app. Every linked teen is listed on the first screen.
  • *334# → My Account → Manage Junior Account → Manage Junior Account Relationship → View Junior Account List.

Next step

Set a daily transaction limit and toggle the services you want on. Full walkthrough on the parent-controls guide.

Frequently asked

Do I need to visit a Safaricom shop with my teen?

No, unless the teen’s line is not yet on M-PESA. For any Safaricom line that is already M-PESA-registered, both the M-PESA app and the web portal work end-to-end from your own phone.

What if I skip the birth certificate upload?

The account is created, but the teen cannot transact yet. Safaricom gives you 30 days to upload the document. The parent app shows a notification labelled with the teen’s name: tap it to complete the upload.

Can I register a line that has M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA or Pochi la Biashara?

Yes, but any outstanding loan has to be repaid and any savings transferred out first. The web portal asks you to consent to those products being closed as part of the conversion.

How many minors can I add?

Up to four M-PESA Go accounts per parent profile.
