Your child’s 18th birthday does not switch M-PESA Go off automatically. The number keeps every M-PESA Go restriction until the parent and the (now adult) child walk into any Safaricom retail shop with the child’s new National ID. There, Safaricom transfers ownership of the SIM to the child, removes the M-PESA Go restrictions, and the number becomes a full adult M-PESA account.
What to bring
- Child’s new National ID. The Kenyan National ID is issued at 18; huduma centres process most applications in 2 to 6 weeks.
- Parent’s ID. The parent whose ID was used to register the M-PESA Go account originally.
- The child’s Safaricom SIM. Either in the phone or as a spare.
- Both people. Safaricom will not do the transfer with only one party present.
Step-by-step
- Wait for the child’s National ID card to arrive (2 to 6 weeks after huduma-centre application).
- Book a Safaricom shop slot in the Safaricom app or on the phone (line 100).
- Both parent and child arrive together at the shop.
- Tell customer care: “I want to convert an M-PESA Go account to adult M-PESA, change of ownership.”
- Staff verifies both IDs. Both parties sign the change-of-ownership form.
- Safaricom updates the KYC record. The wallet stays exactly where it is, on the same number, with the same balance and history.
- M-PESA Go restrictions are dropped. Fuliza / M-Shwari / KCB M-PESA / Halal Pesa / cash withdrawal all open up.
- The (now former) parent’s Junior Account List drops the number.
What unlocks the moment the conversion is done
- Cash withdrawal at any M-PESA agent or ATM (standard tariff).
- Cash deposit at any agent (free, as with adult M-PESA).
- Fuliza overdraftauto-eligible after 6 months of transaction history (which M-PESA Go already produced).
- M-Shwari savings and loan.
- KCB M-PESA account.
- Halal Pesa Shariah-compliant credit.
- Pochi la Biashara (business separation of funds).
- Payments to betting paybills (if the new adult chooses).
- Payments to political parties.
How to prep the teen before the switch
The 18th birthday is a small cliff: overnight, the account picks up loan access, agent cash-out, and the entire betting universe. Reasonable pre-work:
- Explain Fuliza before it is available. A 17-year-old who is about to inherit a KES 100 to 70,000 overdraft facility should understand the daily fee structure. Point to the Fuliza hub.
- Introduce M-Shwari as savings first, not loans. If a teen has been saving into Ziidi via M-PESA Go, the transition is natural. Show them the M-Shwari lock-savings features rather than the loan menu.
- Discuss cash-out access. The block on cash withdrawal was doing a lot of quiet safety work. Now that agent withdrawal is possible, so are the risks of shoulder-surfing at agents and PIN theft.
- Give the betting talk. The paybill block is gone. The teen is now the same legal target as every other 18-year-old for betting-brand marketing.
If parent and child can’t attend together
Safaricom occasionally accepts a signed authorisation letter from the parent, with a copy of the parent’s ID, if the parent is out of the country. That is at customer care’s discretion: call ahead of the shop visit on 100 to confirm your specific case. If the parent is deceased, the child brings the death certificate plus letters of administration; the process moves through Safaricom’s Next-of-Kin claim flow.
Frequently asked
Does the conversion happen automatically on the 18th birthday?
No. The M-PESA Go account keeps its teen restrictions until the parent and the (now-adult) child visit a Safaricom shop with the child’s new National ID and complete the change-of-ownership process.
Do we lose the transaction history?
No. The wallet balance and history stay with the number. Only the ownership record and the M-PESA Go restrictions change.
Can the child do the conversion alone?
Safaricom’s T&C is explicit: both the parent/guardian and the (adult) child must attend the retail shop for the change-of-ownership process.
How much does the conversion cost?
The change of ownership itself is free. If a new SIM is needed (e.g. the old one is lost or damaged), the standard SIM replacement fee applies.
