The Onfon phone financing product

Onfon Mobile's retail phone financing product in Kenya is a rent-to-own or PayGo structure. The consumer pays a deposit at collection and a daily instalment via M-PESA over a fixed term. The phone unlocks permanently on completion of payments. Typical range, per our Phase 0 asset-finance survey:

  • Deposit: KES 1,800 to 12,000 depending on device tier.
  • Daily instalment: KES 50 to 220 depending on device tier.
  • Term: typically 6 to 12 months depending on device and campaign.
  • Device: entry-level to mid-tier smartphones.

Total repayable is the deposit plus every scheduled instalment. That figure is not, as far as we can verify, a headlined disclosure on the Onfon consumer touchpoint. The consumer sees the daily figure first.

Run the maths on the total-cost impact with the true cost of device finance calculator using the specific device deposit and daily instalment.

Cost comparison to CBK-licensed PayGo peers

The two most directly comparable products are:

  • M-KOPA Loan Kenya Ltd (CBK-licensed 30 January 2023) [Source 1]. Smartphones sold on daily instalment. See M-KOPA cost transparency for the pricing framework.
  • Safaricom Lipa Mdogo Mdogo. KaiOS and entry Android devices sold on daily instalment with published day-4 lock terms [Source 3]. See Lipa Mdogo Mdogo missed payment.

On headline daily instalment, Onfon can be competitive in some device tiers. On total transparency (headline cash-equivalent price, itemised interest disclosure, published early-settlement schedule) none of the three publish everything a consumer would ideally want, but Safaricom's published T&Cs give more upfront clarity on the lock mechanic than the alternatives. Structural financing multiples on Kenyan PayGo phones typically fall in the 1.5x to 2x cash-equivalent range based on Phase 1 structural analysis of Lipa Mdogo Mdogo pricing. Apply that as a rough sanity check when comparing an Onfon quote to the cash retail price of the same device model.

Consumer rights when the lender is not CBK-registered

The CBK Digital Credit Providers Code of Conduct [Source 4] is the main direct consumer-protection instrument for asset-financing and credit conduct in Kenya. It binds CBK-licensed credit providers on:

  • Prohibition of debt-shaming and contact with people in the borrower's phone contacts.
  • Prohibition of threats of violence, threats of arrest, and impersonating police.
  • Prohibition of calls between 8pm and 8am.
  • Prohibition of misrepresenting a debt as court-ordered.
  • Prohibition of false CRB listing (listing without proper prior notice).
  • Written complaint routes and CBK Consumer Protection escalation on 0800 720 000.

For an entity not on the CBK register, that Code is not the direct supervisory regime. That does not authorise abusive behaviour, and other Kenyan laws still apply (Consumer Protection Act, Competition Act, Data Protection Act, and general criminal law against harassment or extortion). But the complaint route is different.

See our fuller playbook at what to do if an unlicensed lender takes your money in Kenya for the escalation ladder.

Practical complaint routes for an Onfon-type product

  • Onfon customer service in writing. First step. Keep the messages.
  • COFEK (Consumer Federation of Kenya). Product quality, unfair terms, misleading marketing. Media reach.
  • Competition Authority of Kenya. Unfair contract terms in consumer transactions. Procedural weight but slower.
  • Small Claims Court. Contract disputes up to KES 1 million. Written contract dispute or defective product.
  • DCI Cybercrime. Genuine fraud only, not ordinary contract disputes.
  • Office of the Data Protection Commissioner. If personal data was misused or shared inappropriately during collections.
  • CBK Consumer Protection (0800 720 000). For situations where an entity is carrying on non-deposit-taking credit business without appearing on the CBK register, that is itself an Act-perimeter concern worth raising.

Five questions to ask before signing an Onfon agreement

  1. What is the total repayable amount for this device? Deposit plus every daily instalment. Get it in writing.
  2. What is the schedule end date? The exact date the final payment is due.
  3. What is the current regulatory posture of Onfon Mobile with respect to the CBK non-deposit-taking credit register? Ask them to confirm their current status in writing.
  4. What happens on a missed payment? Lock timing, grace period, late fees, escalation ladder.
  5. Will default be reported to a CRB? If so, under which agency and after how many days of arrears.

Red flags

  • Refusal to give the total repayable in writing.
  • Any claim that a phone can be repossessed by police over a civil debt. Not lawful.
  • Contact between 8pm and 8am, or calls to your phone contacts. General harassment principles apply even outside the CBK Code direct-supervision remit.
  • Requests to sign contracts you have not read in full, or that omit the total repayable figure.
  • Any suggestion that CBK licensing does not matter because Onfon has some other unspecified authorisation. Ask for a copy of any such authorisation in writing.

Wider market context

The Business Laws (Amendment) Act, No. 20 of 2024 [Source 2] materially expanded CBK supervision over asset-financing, PAYGo, and BNPL products. Section 33S introduced penalties for unlicensed operation. As of the April 2026 register [Source 1], the CBK has licensed a substantial cohort of credit providers, including Watu, Mogo, and M-KOPA. Not every phone-financing operator in Kenya is on that register. This is a market-transition observation, not a legal ruling on any specific operator.

FAQ

How much does an Onfon phone cost in Kenya on financing?

Deposit typically KES 1,800 to 12,000 and daily instalment typically KES 50 to 220 depending on the device tier. Total repayable depends on the specific device and term and Onfon does not publish a headline cash-vs-financed comparison.

Is Onfon in the CBK non-deposit-taking credit business register?

As of the CBK April 2026 published register, Onfon Mobile is not listed. This is a factual public-record observation. See our companion default guide for what changes as a result.

What consumer protections apply if the lender is not on the CBK register?

The CBK Digital Credit Providers Code of Conduct applies to CBK-licensed credit providers. Non-CBK-registered entities are not directly supervised by CBK under that Code. Consumer protection routes are COFEK, the Competition Authority of Kenya, Small Claims Court for contract disputes, and DCI Cybercrime for genuine fraud.

Can Onfon list me on CRB?

CBK-licensed credit providers report directly to CRB. Non-CBK-registered entities do not have the same direct reporting pathway. Whether Onfon lists defaulters depends on any commercial or agency arrangements. Ask in writing before signing.

Should I sign an Onfon financing agreement?

That is your decision. This guide sets out the questions to ask before signing and the material differences from CBK-licensed peers so you can make a conscious choice.
