What Watu is (and is not)
Watu Credit Ltd is a Kenyan asset-finance lender whose main product is boda boda motorbike financing. It is not a personal loan, not a consumer credit line, and not a general-purpose lender. The bike itself is the collateral: registered in Watu's name until the final weekly payment lands. A GPS tracker is fitted at signing and can restrict the engine remotely if you fall into arrears.
Watu operates from a network of branches across Kenya, plus sister operations in Uganda and Tanzania under the Watu Africa brand. In Kenya, the tractor product is called Watu Simba and is aimed at farming clusters, not at general consumers.
The deposit
Watu typically asks for a deposit in the KES 10,000 to 30,000 range for common Boxer, TVS, and Bajaj boda models in 2026. The exact figure depends on:
- Which bike model you pick (Boxer, TVS, Bajaj Boxer, Yamaha Crux)
- Branch policy and any deposit-waiver promotion in effect that month
- Whether you are financing through a boda boda group / SACCO or as an individual
- Your prior payment history if you have financed a bike with Watu before
The deposit is non-refundable. If the deal falls apart at signing, the deposit stays with Watu. If you default later in the term, both the deposit and all past instalments are forfeit at repossession.
The weekly instalment
Weekly instalments for a common Boxer typically fall in the KES 2,000 to 3,500 range, spread over 18 to 30 months (roughly 78 to 130 payments). The instalment is a bundled figure that includes:
- Loan principal repayment
- Interest / finance charge (quoted as part of the total repayment figure at signing)
- Bundled motor insurance (typically third-party or comprehensive, plus passenger cover)
- Tracker device rental and monitoring fee
Because insurance and tracker are bundled, you cannot swap them for cover you sourced yourself while the bike is under finance. This adds cost but simplifies the weekly figure into one M-PESA payment.
Realistic total repayment
A common Boxer with a KES 180,000 to 220,000 cash-equivalent price, financed with a KES 15,000 deposit over 24 months of weekly payments at roughly KES 2,800 a week, works out to a total repayment in the rough ballpark of KES 305,000 (deposit + about 104 weekly payments). That is roughly 1.5 to 1.7 times the cash price for that specific scenario. Longer terms and lower deposits push the multiple toward two to three times cash, especially for tuk-tuk and more expensive bike models.
How to pay Watu via M-PESA
- Lipa na M-PESA
- Pay Bill
- Business number: 650880
- Account number: your Kenyan National ID number
- Amount (at least the weekly instalment; partial payments cumulate)
- Enter PIN, confirm the merchant name reads Watu Credit Ltd or similar, then send
Standard M-PESA paybill tariff applies. Payments usually reflect on the Watu ledger within a few hours. If the payment does not appear within 24 hours, take the M-PESA confirmation code to a Watu branch or call customer care. Lead with the M-PESA code: that is the only reference that unlocks a manual re-allocation.
What happens if you default
- First few days late: SMS and call reminders. Some borrowers report tracker throttling.
- Around a week late: engine restriction. The tracker prevents ignition.
- Around two weeks late: repossession. Watu branch collects the bike.
- Anytime in arrears: CRB reporting begins, affecting future credit.
- At repossession: deposit and prior instalments are forfeit.
Watu does restructure loans (longer term, smaller weekly) but only if you ask before the account goes into arrears. Waiting until the tracker restricts the bike usually forecloses that option.
When Watu is not the best choice
If you are already a shares-paying member of a boda boda SACCO, a SACCO loan almost always beats Watu on total cost. If you have a stable KRA-verified income and can pass Mogo credit checks, Mogo often quotes a lower total repayment. If you specifically want an electric motorbike, compare against M-KOPA Mobility and Roam. Watu wins on speed of approval, first-time-borrower acceptance, and pure convenience of the M-PESA weekly rail.
FAQ
What is the Watu Credit deposit for a Boxer in 2026?
Roughly KES 10,000 to 30,000 depending on branch, model, and any promotional deposit-waiver in effect. Confirm with the Watu branch handling your application before committing: deposit amounts move with dealer stock levels.
How much are Watu weekly instalments?
Typically KES 2,000 to 3,500 a week for common Boxer / TVS / Bajaj boda models, spread across 18 to 30 months. The higher your deposit, the lower the weekly. Insurance and tracker fee are bundled into the weekly figure.
What is the Watu paybill number?
Watu Credit paybill is 650880. Account number = your Kenyan National ID. Not your agreement number, not your phone number. Any other paybill you see forwarded on WhatsApp is a scam.
Can I settle a Watu loan early?
Yes. Ask the branch for a written early-settlement figure. Watu quotes total repayment at signing rather than variable interest, so early settlement discounts the remaining weeks proportionally. Some borrowers have reported figure discrepancies between customer care and branch; always insist on a written statement.
What happens if I miss a Watu weekly payment?
A few days grace, then the tracker can restrict the bike. Arrears over about two weeks usually trigger repossession, because the bike stays in Watu's name until final payment. Arrears are also reported to CRB. If you know you will miss a payment, call the branch before it lapses.
Is the deposit refundable if I change my mind after signing?
No. The Watu deposit is non-refundable once the agreement is signed and the bike is released. Repossession later in the term also forfeits the deposit plus all past instalments.
Does Watu finance electric bikes?
Watu is expanding electric bike coverage but the primary stock in most branches is still petrol Boxer, TVS, and Bajaj. For electric specifically, compare against M-KOPA Mobility and Roam, both of which specialise in e-motorbikes.
