Why early settlement matters
Kenyan device and asset finance products (Safaricom Lipa Mdogo Mdogo, Watu Credit, Mogo Auto, mobile loan apps, SACCO asset finance) are typically priced with the borrower's daily or weekly cashflow in mind. That framing hides how much of the total repayment is interest, and how much of that interest is unaccrued (i.e. attributable to future months that have not happened yet).
A borrower who comes into a windfall (bonus, sold an asset, inherited money) and can clear the remaining balance early may save materially by paying an early-settlement figure rather than continuing to service the full daily or weekly instalment schedule. May, because the saving depends on how the specific product treats unaccrued interest on early payoff.
How early settlement pricing works
There are two structures in the market:
- Reducing-balance loan. Interest is charged only on the outstanding principal each period. Paying off early stops future interest from accruing entirely. The early-settlement figure is close to the current outstanding principal plus any accrued interest to date. This is what Watu Credit runs at 8.6% per month reducing balance [Source 1].
- Flat-rate or bundled-price loan. The total repayment is fixed at the start (e.g. "total to pay: KES 38,624" on the Itel A60 LMM tier [Source 2]). Early payoff may not remove any interest, or may remove only some, depending on the lender's policy. Here the early-settlement figure can be almost the same as continuing to pay the full schedule, or moderately better.
The material saving on early settlement is much greater on reducing-balance products than on flat-rate or bundled-price products. Before you request a quote, know which structure your loan is on.
Lender by lender
Safaricom Lipa Mdogo Mdogo
LMM is structured as a daily-instalment schedule with a published total-paid figure per tier [Source 2]. On the Itel A60, for example, the daily is KES 100 for 366 days, ending at a stated total of KES 38,624 after a KES 2,000 deposit. On the Itel A24 the daily is KES 50 for 370 days, total KES 18,785 after a KES 500 deposit. See our full pricing table at what Lipa Mdogo Mdogo actually costs.
Whether Safaricom applies a discount for paying the remaining balance in one lump before the schedule completes is not published in the T&Cs [Source 2]. Specific LMM early-settlement policy as of August 2026 is unverified in this article. Verify with Safaricom customer care on 100 or 0722 002 100 before you send a lump-sum payment; in principle the LMM daily structure includes both device and bundle components (see the bundle decomposition analysis in the flagship article), which means the early-settlement question overlaps with the "do I get a refund on the unused bundle" question. Get both answered in writing.
Watu Credit
Watu is priced on a reducing-balance basis at 8.6% per month, per the Watu Country Manager's testimony to the Kenya National Assembly Finance Committee in May 2024 [Source 1]. On a reducing-balance structure, an early-settlement figure quoted at the branch is typically the current outstanding principal plus accrued interest to date, without future unaccrued interest. This can be a materially lower figure than continuing to pay through the term.
The specific early-settlement figure and any lender-imposed charges are quoted at the branch on request. Insist on the figure in writing, on Watu-branded letterhead or email, before making the lump-sum payment. If Watu levies an early-settlement processing fee, that should be visible in the written quote too.
Mogo Auto
Mogo publishes headline terms in its marketing (from 22% down, term 52 to 78 weeks, from KES 452 per day, per the boda financing methodology page). Mogo has not published its own APR structure to the record, so the early-settlement discount depends on Mogo's internal underlying rate structure. Specific Mogo early-settlement policy as of August 2026 is unverified in this article. Request the written early-settlement figure at branch. Verify that Mogo Auto Ltd is on the CBK register (licensed 27 June 2024 per the April 2026 publication [Source 3]) before signing any settlement paperwork; check via our CBK licence checker.
Other digital lenders and BNPL
For digital loan apps (Tala, Branch, M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, Zenka, others) and BNPL providers, early settlement is typically permitted, and on short-tenor products the saving from paying off early may be small in absolute shillings but material as a percentage of the remaining cost. Request the settlement figure in-app or via customer care and get it in writing before paying.
Documentation to insist on
A written early-settlement quote should specify:
- The settlement amount (the specific KES figure that clears the loan in full).
- The date the quote is valid to (typically 3 to 14 days).
- Confirmation that this figure clears the loan in full (no residual, no follow-up payment).
- Confirmation of what happens post-settlement: for LMM, the device management client will be deactivated; for Watu or Mogo, the caveat will be lifted from NTSA TIMS and the logbook released. See getting your logbook after the final payment.
- Any early-settlement processing fee, itemised.
Without this documentation, an early settlement can result in a "we did not receive the settlement, please continue paying" scenario months later, with no written record to fall back on.
When the branch and customer care disagree on the figure
A common issue: the branch quotes one figure, customer care quotes another. This typically happens because they are looking at different ledger states or applying different early-settlement rules. Do not pay either figure until reconciled. Options:
- Ask both channels to put their figures in writing.
- Ask each to explain how the figure was calculated.
- Ask each to confirm the figure will be honoured if paid.
The written figure from customer care via a formal channel (email from an official domain, or in-app messaging) is typically the safer anchor. A verbal branch figure that contradicts the written channel figure is usually the branch being wrong.
When early settlement saves money, and when it does not
Early settlement saves the most on:
- High-rate reducing-balance products (e.g. Watu at 8.6% per month). Paying off 6 months into an 18-month loan can save the majority of the remaining interest.
- Long-remaining tenor. The more future months of interest are removed, the bigger the saving.
Early settlement saves the least on:
- Flat-rate or bundled-price products near the end of tenure. Most of the fixed total has already been amortised; the saving is small.
- Products where the price includes a bundle (LMM). Paying off the credit component early may not entitle you to a refund of the unused bundle portion, depending on how the lender treats it.
The arithmetic to compare: (remaining scheduled payments) minus (written early-settlement figure) = your saving. Divide by the number of months remaining to get the effective interest saving.
Regulatory framing
Watu Credit Ltd (licensed 5 June 2025) and Mogo Auto Ltd (licensed 27 June 2024) are on the CBK non-deposit-taking credit business register per the April 2026 publication [Source 3], meaning they are legitimately supervised credit providers. Both are bound by CBK consumer-protection expectations. An unlicensed lender (which should not be operating post the Business Laws (Amendment) Act No. 20 of 2024 section 33S regime [Source 4]) has weaker enforceable claims and is a higher risk on any settlement dispute. FAQ
Does Safaricom Lipa Mdogo Mdogo offer an early settlement discount?
Safaricom's Lipa Mdogo Mdogo Terms and Conditions structure the product as a daily-instalment schedule up to a stated total paid figure. Whether Safaricom applies a discount for paying the remaining balance in one lump is not published in the T&Cs; verify with Safaricom customer care on 100 or 0722 002 100 for the current position.
Does Watu Credit offer an early settlement discount?
Watu quotes an early-settlement figure at branch on request. Whether that figure is materially lower than continuing to pay the full instalment schedule depends on the timing and the unaccrued interest treatment. Ask for the early-settlement figure in writing before agreeing to anything.
Why does the outstanding balance differ from the early-settlement figure?
The outstanding balance is the sum of remaining instalments (principal + all future interest). The early-settlement figure reduces or removes unaccrued interest that would have applied to the future months. On a reducing-balance product, this can be a significant discount; on a flat-rate product, less so.
What documentation should I insist on for an early settlement?
A written early-settlement quote from the lender that specifies: the settlement amount, the settlement date it is valid to, the confirmation that this figure clears the loan in full, and confirmation that the caveat on your logbook (or the device management client on your phone) will be lifted on receipt.
