Working step by step

  1. Loan principal P = cash price - deposit = KES 121,500
  2. Monthly rate r_m = 8.60% = 0.0860
  3. Term n = 24 months
  4. Monthly payment M = P x r_m x (1+r_m)^n / ((1+r_m)^n - 1) = KES 12,123
  5. Total paid = deposit + M x n = KES 304,445
  6. Nominal APR = r_m x 12 = 103.2%
  7. Effective APR (compounded) = (1+r_m)^12 - 1 = 169.1%

Rate default of 8.6% per month reducing balance is Watu Credit Country Manager testimony to Kenya National Assembly Finance Committee, May 2024. Verify current rate with your lender before signing.

How the monthly payment is computed

The calculator uses the standard reducing-balance amortisation formula. Every month the interest is charged on the outstanding balance, not on the original principal, so early payments are mostly interest and later payments are mostly principal. The formula that produces a constant monthly payment M is:

M = P * r_m * (1 + r_m)^n / ((1 + r_m)^n - 1)

where
  P = loan principal (cash price minus deposit)
  r_m  = monthly interest rate (e.g. 0.086 for 8.6% per month)
  n    = term in months

Total repayment is deposit plus M multiplied by n. The repayment multiple is total paid divided by cash price. The nominal APR is r_m times 12, and the effective compounded APR is (1 + r_m)^12 minus 1. The effective APR is the honest annual comparison for a monthly-compounding loan.

Why 8.6% per month is the default

In May 2024, Watu Credit's Country Manager confirmed the 8.6% per month reducing-balance rate to the Kenya National Assembly Finance Committee. On a 24 month loan, this compounds to an effective APR of about 168% per year. That is significantly higher than the nominal 103.2% headline (8.6 times 12) because monthly compounding matters. Confirm the exact rate on your own agreement before signing, since Watu and Mogo may quote different rates by region, deposit or bike model.

What this calculator excludes

The calculator models the headline principal and interest schedule only. It does not include GPS tracker fees, mandatory insurance loaded into the loan, processing fees, late-payment penalties, or repossession and legal costs if you default. Frequently asked

Is 8.6% per month really the Watu Credit rate?

Yes, that number came directly from Watu Credit's Country Manager during testimony to the Kenya National Assembly Finance Committee in May 2024. Watu may quote different rates in different circumstances (deposit size, bike model, region) so treat 8.6% as a public reference rate and verify against your own agreement before signing.

Why is the effective APR so much higher than 8.6% times 12?

Monthly compounding. 8.6% per month times 12 is 103.2% (nominal). But interest is added each month to a balance that already includes prior interest, so the true annual equivalent is (1 + 0.086)^12 - 1, which is about 168% per year. The effective APR is the number you should compare against a bank asset-finance loan or a SACCO loan.

Does this cover Mogo or other boda lenders?

Yes. The formula is generic to any reducing-balance monthly-rate loan. Just enter the monthly rate your lender actually quotes. Mogo, Watu and bank asset-finance loans all fit this structure. Only the input rate changes.

What about extra fees, tracker, insurance?

The calculator returns the pure principal-and-interest amortisation. Real Watu / Mogo agreements often include a GPS tracker fee, compulsory insurance rolled into the loan, and a processing fee. Add those to your total-cost view, or read the methodology guide for a fuller breakdown.

What is a reasonable deposit?

Watu typically asks for around 10% of cash price, sometimes more depending on model and region. Mogo's deposits can differ. A higher deposit reduces the loan principal one-for-one and cuts both the monthly payment and the total interest paid.
