Why settlement matters
A HELB loan sits on your CRB record while active. Even in good standing (employer deduction on time, no penalties), it shows as an open credit facility. Once cleared, HELB updates CRB to reflect a closed and settled account, which improves your credit score materially for future borrowing.
For borrowers who have defaulted and been CRB-listed, settlement is the fastest lever to remove the negative listing. Nothing else clears a HELB default; only paying and receiving the clearance certificate.
Requesting the settlement quote
The settlement figure is not necessarily the same as the current balance. HELB uses the settlement quote as an opportunity to negotiate down accumulated penalties (not principal or contractual interest) if the borrower commits to a full payoff. Three ways to get the quote:
- USSD: dial
*642#, log in, choose Loan Status; the balance is the starting point. - Portal: log into helb.co.ke; the dashboard shows current balance and payment history.
- Contact Centre: call 0711 052 000. Ask for the settlement balance, not the current balance. If penalties have accrued, request the discretionary discount and get the offer confirmed in writing (email from contactcentre@helb.co.ke).
Paying the settlement
Two rails:
Direct paybill (200800)
- Open M-PESA, Pay Bill.
- Business number: 200800.
- Account: your National ID (or HELB loan number).
- Amount: the quoted settlement figure, exact.
- PIN, confirm.
Via eCitizen gateway (through *642#)
The USSD Loan Repayment flow now generates an eCitizen invoice; you enter your M-PESA PIN on the STK prompt that follows. The paybill in this path is the eCitizen 222222; the account is the eCitizen invoice reference. Both rails end up at HELB; use the one that fits your flow.
Above KES 250,000 (M-PESA per-transaction cap), split across multiple payments or use bank transfer. HELB has collection accounts at KCB, NCBA, and Co-op published on helb.co.ke.
Getting the clearance certificate
- Log into helb.co.ke and confirm the balance shows KES 0.
- Navigate to Certification then Clearance Certificate.
- Complete the request; a KES 1,000 to 2,000 certificate fee applies (verify at request).
- PDF certificate arrives at your registered email within 7 working days.
The clearance certificate is required by employers in banking, insurance, and government, and often for visa applications where credit history is queried. Keep the PDF safe and printable.
Removal from CRB
HELB updates the CRB status of settled loans within 30 days. To verify:
- Pull a free annual CRB report from Metropol (*433#), TransUnion (*332#), or Creditinfo.
- Confirm the HELB entry shows Closed or Settled, not Open Default.
- If still showing as a default after 30 days, forward the clearance certificate to the bureau and request a rectification. See how to get off CRB.

FAQ
Does HELB offer a settlement discount?
HELB has historically negotiated small discounts on accumulated penalties when a borrower clears the full balance in one go. The size of the discount is discretionary and typically applies only to penalties, not principal or contractual interest. Verify current offer with the HELB Contact Centre before paying.
How long does the clearance certificate take?
HELB issues a clearance certificate within 7 working days of a fully-cleared account. It is emailed as PDF from clearance@helb.co.ke or made available on the portal.
Does settling automatically remove me from CRB?
HELB updates the CRB status within 30 days of full settlement. To confirm the removal, pull your CRB report from Metropol, TransUnion, or Creditinfo after 30 days. If still listed, see the how to get off CRB guide.
Can I settle from abroad?
Yes. Get the quote by USSD or by email, then pay via M-PESA Global to paybill 200800 or via bank transfer to the HELB collection accounts published on helb.co.ke.
