What "not reflecting" actually means
"Not reflecting" is doing two different jobs in most user reports. It helps to separate them, because the recovery steps differ.
- Version A, portal not updated. The M-PESA confirmation SMS arrived. You paid the SHA paybill 200222 with your National ID. But when you log into afyayangu.go.ke and open your payment history, the payment is not listed. Your coverage status may still read active from an earlier month, or it may have lapsed.
- Version B, coverage not renewed. The payment appears in your afyayangu history, but your coverage status still reads inactive or dormant, and a facility has refused to bill SHA for you. This is a different problem, usually caused by the payment not being credited to the current coverage month or your registration missing dependents.
The five real causes
1. Reconciliation lag (24 to 72 hours)
SHA reconciles M-PESA payments into member accounts in overnight batches. Same-day reflection does happen, but the SHA-published expectation is that a correct payment should show in your afyayangu payment history within 24 to 72 hours. The consultant read of sha.go.ke on 26 August 2026 confirms this window. If you paid last night and it is 6am the next morning, the answer is: wait.
2. Wrong ID format in the account number
The single biggest cause of "payment landed but was not credited to my record" is a mistyped account number. SHA reconciles by National ID. If the ID field contains spaces, a leading zero that is not on your card, letters, dashes, or a passport number instead of an ID, the money lands but does not attach to your member record. It sits in the SHA suspense ledger until manually re-attributed.
The account number must be your exact National ID as printed on your card, digits only.
3. Payment made during system maintenance
SHA has published maintenance windows during which afyayangu.go.ke and the reconciliation engine are offline. Payments made during maintenance still succeed on M-PESA (Safaricom is unaffected) but sit in the queue until SHA comes back up. Add up to another 24 hours on top of the normal 24 to 72 hour window if you paid during a known SHA outage.
4. Employer remittance not linked (Tier 1 only)
This is the classic salaried-employee trap. Your payslip shows the SHA deduction. Payroll has debited your gross. But afyayangu.go.ke shows you as inactive. What has happened: the employer's remittance file uploaded to employers.sha.go.ke has not linked to your specific member record, usually because your National ID and SHA member number are mismatched between the payroll system and the SHA portal.
Employers must remit contributions by the 9th of the following month, per SHA consultant guidance sourced from SHA. Which means a September deduction might not appear in afyayangu until mid-October in the worst case. If you are within that window, wait. If you are past it, follow up with payroll before contacting SHA.
5. Duplicate registration under old NHIF number
Some members registered with SHA using their old NHIF number instead of their National ID, or SHA's auto-migration from NHIF created a duplicate record that conflicts with a fresh SHA registration. Payments to one record do not show against the other. This is a data-hygiene issue that only SHA can resolve, and it requires a Huduma Centre or SHA branch visit with the M-PESA confirmation SMS plus your ID card.
Step-by-step recovery
Work through these in order. Most cases resolve at step 2 or 3.
Step 1, verify your M-PESA transaction
Open your M-PESA statement (SMS or app). Confirm the transaction:
- Recipient: PAY BILL 200222 (SHA)
- Account: your National ID number, digits only
- Amount: the exact figure you owe (minimum KES 300)
- Status: Confirmed, with an M-PESA code (e.g. TFR7AB8CD)
If any of these is wrong, that is your issue. If the account number is wrong specifically, the payment is not lost, it sits in SHA suspense, but recovery will take longer (see step 5).
Step 2, log into afyayangu.go.ke and check payment history
Go to afyayangu.go.ke, log in with your National ID, and open the payment history section. If your payment appears there, coverage is on: you are done. If it does not appear and it is less than 72 hours since you paid, wait and re-check at the 72 hour mark. If it does not appear at 72 hours, go to step 3.
Step 3, USSD *147# contribution status check
SHA supports a USSD shortcut for members without smartphone access. Dial *147# from your Safaricom line registered with SHA, follow the prompts to check contribution status. If USSD confirms your payment but the web portal does not, that is usually a portal cache issue, force-refresh afyayangu.go.ke and re-check. If both are silent, escalate.
Step 4, call SHA on 0800 720 601
The toll-free helpline is 0800 720 601. Have ready: your M-PESA confirmation code, your National ID, the phone number that sent the payment, and the date of payment. The agent can check the SHA suspense ledger and confirm whether the payment is stuck there.
Step 5, physical SHA branch or Huduma Centre visit
If the helpline cannot resolve within their SLA, take the M-PESA confirmation SMS (screenshot is fine) and your original National ID card to the nearest SHA branch or Huduma Centre. In-person suspense recovery and record-merging is usually same-day. The SHA head office address is SHA Building, Community Area, Ragati Road, P.O. Box 30443-00100, Nairobi, per sha.go.ke (accessed 26 August 2026).
If it is still not reflecting after 72 hours
At the 72 hour mark, do not keep waiting silently. Escalate.
- Call 0800 720 601 first (fastest, free, gets a case reference).
- If unresolved within 48 hours of the call, walk in with your documents.
- If unresolved after the branch visit, ask for the SHA appeals/re-assessment desk contact for a formal complaint. SHA publishes the appeals channel via sha.go.ke.
Can I reverse a SHA M-PESA payment?
A payment made correctly (paybill 200222, valid National ID account, minimum KES 300) is not reversed, it will be credited to your record, even if it sits in suspense first. If you paid the wrong paybill entirely, use the M-PESA reversal request within the M-PESA reversal window (see our M-PESA reversal guide) and re-pay to 200222. Do not attempt to reverse a correctly-addressed SHA payment; you will lose your recovery paper trail.
Preventing this next month
- Save the SHA paybill (200222) as a named saved-recipient in your M-PESA app so you never mistype it.
- Type your National ID slowly and verify it before the Send PIN prompt.
- Pay by the 5th of the month, so any 72-hour lag still lands you inside the current coverage cycle.
- If you are salaried, check your payslip monthly and cross-check afyayangu.go.ke quarterly. Do not wait for a hospital visit to discover a Tier 1 remittance gap.
