You contribute for 30, 40 years. This guide is about how you (or your family) actually get the money out. NSSF pays six categories of benefit, each with its own age rule, form, and evidence list. Since 2024 most claims can be lodged on the ecitizen.nssf.or.ke portal and the physical branch step is optional. We cover each one below.
The six NSSF benefits
- Retirement Benefit: at age 60, or age 50 for early retirees who have permanently left paid employment.
- Survivors Benefit: to nominated dependants if the member dies before retirement.
- Invalidity Benefit: if the member becomes permanently incapacitated and unable to work.
- Withdrawal Benefit: for members who have emigrated permanently or reach age 65 without formally retiring.
- Funeral Grant: a one-off KES 10,000 (verify current amount on the NSSF site; the figure has moved with gazette notices) to help with immediate funeral expenses.
- Emigration Grant: a full withdrawal for members leaving Kenya permanently, subject to evidence of emigration.
Retirement Benefit (age 60, or 50 early)
Documents
- Original National ID and copy.
- NSSF membership card or number.
- Recent (within 3 months) passport photo.
- Bank account details (bank name, branch, account number).
- KRA PIN.
- For early retirement at 50: letter from employer confirming permanent retirement, or a statutory declaration if self-employed.
How to claim
- Log in at ecitizen.nssf.or.ke.
- Choose Benefits then File a Claim.
- Select Retirement Benefit.
- Upload the documents. Sign the declaration.
- Track status under My Claims. NSSF advises 60 days from complete-file date to payment; portal claims often complete faster.
Survivors Benefit
Payable when the member dies before or after retirement. Nominated dependants (spouse, children, or others named on the nomination form) claim.
- Death certificate (original + copy).
- Deceased member's NSSF number and ID.
- Marriage certificate (spouse), birth certificates (children), or letters of administration (other dependants).
- Each claimant's National ID, KRA PIN, bank details, and passport photo.
- Chief's or Assistant Chief's letter confirming relationship if documentary evidence is thin.
Payment is proportional to the nomination percentages on file. If no nomination exists, NSSF applies the intestate rules under the Law of Succession Act, which requires letters of administration from a court and adds months to the timeline.
Invalidity Benefit
For members permanently incapacitated by illness or injury. Requires a medical board report from a designated NSSF-recognised medical officer certifying permanent inability to work. Contribution history determines lump-sum size; NSSF also pays a supplemental pension for members with sufficient credits.
Funeral Grant
A one-off payment made within days of a member's death, to whichever family member submits the death certificate and their own ID first. The amount is set by gazette notice; confirm the current figure on the NSSF site or by dialling *303#. This grant does not affect the Survivors Benefit or Retirement Benefit later.
Emigration and Withdrawal
Members who emigrate permanently can claim a full withdrawal on evidence of departure (long-term visa or residency of the new country, proof of address abroad). Members who reach age 65 without formally retiring can claim under the age-based withdrawal category. Both routes are subject to the tax treatment on the amount above the tax-free threshold.

FAQ
At what age can I claim my NSSF benefit?
Full retirement benefit at 60. Early retirement at 50 if you have permanently retired from paid employment. Age-based withdrawal is available at 65 regardless of employment status.
How long does the claim take?
NSSF publishes a 60-day service standard from complete documentation to payment. Online claims through the portal are typically faster (2 to 4 weeks). Complex cases (missing contributions, contested next of kin, name mismatches) can run 3 to 6 months.
Is my NSSF payout taxed?
Withdrawals within tax-free limits are exempt (KES 600,000 lump sum plus KES 25,000 per full year of pensionable service, as of the Finance Act 2023). Amounts above those limits are taxed at graduated rates. Retirement benefits paid to persons aged 65+ are fully exempt.
What do my beneficiaries claim if I die before retiring?
The Survivors Benefit, payable to nominated next of kin. NSSF pays either a lump sum or a pension based on the deceased member's contribution record. Update your next-of-kin nomination on the portal each time your family situation changes.
