M-PESA archives funds when your wallet balance exceeds the KES 500,000 statutory limit or when the CBK flags the account for compliance review. To retrieve archived funds, visit any Safaricom shop with your national ID or dial *234# and select Complaints. Archival is a regulatory hold, not a forfeiture. The money is still yours. Standard release takes 3 to 14 business days depending on the trigger.

What causes M-PESA to archive your money

TriggerWhat it meansTypical clearance
Wallet balance breaches KES 500,000The statutory M-PESA wallet ceiling was crossed by an incoming payment.3 to 5 business days
Daily aggregate above KES 500,000 in a single dayTotal credits or debits crossed the daily aggregate limit.3 to 5 business days

Every archival triggers an SMS from Safaricom stating the reason (typically a short code or a plain-language line such as "Your account has been archived pending KYC review"). Keep that SMS. You will need it at the shop.

Method 1: Safaricom shop (works for every trigger)

  1. Locate your nearest Safaricom Care Centre (not just an M-PESA agent).
  2. Take an original national ID (passport for foreign nationals), the SIM registered under your name, and the archival SMS.
  3. If the trigger was a large incoming payment, bring source-of-funds evidence: sale agreement, invoice, salary slip, or a matching bank statement.
  4. Ask the agent to raise a Fund Retrieval / Archive Release ticket. They will re-run KYC on iPRS and, if the balance breached the ceiling, arrange for the excess to be paid out to a nominated bank account.
  5. You receive an SMS confirmation with a ticket number. Follow up on 100 if it has not resolved within the timeframe on your ticket.

Method 2: *234# complaint (feature phone friendly)

  1. Dial *234# on the Safaricom line the M-PESA is registered under.
  2. Select My Account.
  3. Select Complaints (or "M-PESA Support" depending on menu version).
  4. Enter the reason code from the archival SMS, or type a short description such as "archived funds retrieval".
  5. Confirm with your M-PESA PIN. You get a ticket number by SMS.

USSD works on any phone, no data needed. This is the recommended path if you cannot get to a shop, but you will still be asked to visit a Care Centre if the trigger was KYC or AML.

Method 3: Safaricom Care 100

  • Call 100 from your Safaricom line (free) or +254 722 002 100 from any other line.
  • Email safaricare@safaricom.co.ke with your ID number, phone number, and the archival SMS.
  • Or use Safaricom's WhatsApp business channel on 0722 002 100.

If the trigger was the KES 500,000 ceiling

This is the most common cause of archival. It usually happens when a bank transfer, M-PESA to M-PESA send, or diaspora remittance pushes your wallet over KES 500,000. The remedy is straightforward:

  1. Withdraw the excess to a bank account via M-PESA to Bank in the M-PESA app. Once the wallet is below KES 500,000, the archived amount is released back into the accessible balance within 24 hours.
  2. Or ask the shop to arrange a one-off manual payout to your bank account for the full archived amount.
  3. If you regularly need to hold more than KES 500,000, move funds into a bank account or a money market fund. The M-PESA wallet is not designed as a store of value at that scale.

If the trigger was KYC re-verification

Safaricom periodically re-runs KYC against iPRS (the government identity registry). Common mismatches:

  • SIM registered with an old-format national ID, now replaced with a new-format ID.
  • Name change after marriage that was updated on iPRS but not on the SIM.
  • Line originally registered under a parent or guardian while you were a minor.
  • Foreign national whose Alien Card has expired.

The fix is always a Safaricom Care Centre visit with the current, valid ID document. The agent updates the SIM registration, re-runs KYC, and releases the archived balance typically within 7 business days.

Protect yourself while the case is open

  1. Keep every SMS from Safaricom about the archival. They are your paper trail.
  2. Never share your M-PESA PIN with any agent. Legitimate Care Centre staff never ask for it. Anyone who does is running a scam.
  3. Do not accept an offer to "fast-track" retrieval for a fee. There is no fast-track service; you are being scammed.
  4. Log every ticket number and follow up on 100 if the ticket ages past the SLA on your SMS.
