Depositing to Betika is one of the most-searched topics in Kenyan betting, partly because the paybill changes occasionally and partly because scammers constantly post fake "Betika paybill" numbers on social media. This guide is the verified flow, what it costs, and how to handle the small number of cases where a deposit doesn't reflect.
Step-by-step deposit
- Open M-PESA on your phone, SIM toolkit, M-PESA app, or Safaricom OneApp.
- Select Lipa na M-PESA → Pay Bill.
- Enter business number 290290.
- For the account, enter BETIKA (the literal word) or your Betika-registered Safaricom phone number. Both work; Betika support advises "BETIKA". No spaces, no plus sign in the phone number form.
- Enter the amount in KES. Minimum KES 50, typical maximum KES 70,000 per transaction.
- Enter your M-PESA PIN.
- Confirm.
You receive an M-PESA SMS with a transaction code, then a separate Betika SMS confirming the credit. The Betika confirmation typically arrives within 1-5 minutes.
What it costs
Betika does not charge a deposit fee. The cost is the standard M-PESA paybill tariff, which the customer pays:
- KES 50 - 100: KES 0 (free band)
- KES 101 - 500: KES 5
- KES 501 - 1,000: KES 10
- KES 1,001 - 1,500: KES 15
- KES 1,501 - 2,500: KES 20
- KES 2,501 - 5,000: KES 34
- KES 5,001 - 10,000: KES 48
- KES 10,001 - 70,000 (per Betika cap): KES 57 - 105 depending on bracket
The full paybill tariff schedule is in our M-PESA charges 2026 guide.
On top of the M-PESA paybill fee, Kenya applies a 5% deposit tax (Finance Act 2025) on the amount that lands in your Betika wallet. So a KES 100 M-PESA deposit reaches the wallet as KES 95. A separate 5% excise applies when you place each stake, plus a 5% withdrawal tax on any withdrawals back to M-PESA. The old 20% withholding tax on winnings has been replaced by the flat 5% withdrawal tax. See our betting tax 2026 guide.
If a deposit doesn't reflect
- Check the M-PESA SMS. The recipient name should read "BETIKA KENYA" or similar. If it's a different name (a person or unfamiliar business), you paid the wrong paybill, likely a scam paybill. Reverse the M-PESA transaction using the standard reversal flow (see our M-PESA reversal guide) and report the scam to Safaricom on 100.
- Verify the account number. You must enter your Betika-registered phone number, not someone else's. If you sent to the wrong account, contact Betika support, they can manually re-allocate within 24 hours given the M-PESA transaction code.
- Wait 30 minutes. 95% of deposits reflect in under 5 minutes; the remainder usually clear within 30. Mid-day on big match days can be slower.
- Contact Betika support if the deposit hasn't reflected after 30 minutes. Live chat in the app or email support@betika.com. Always lead with the M-PESA transaction code.
Common mistakes
- Wrong paybill. Anything other than 290290 for Betika is incorrect. Triple-check before sending.
- Phone number with country code. Use 0723... format, not +254723... The paybill account field rejects the plus sign and country code.
- Spaces or dashes in the phone number. Strip them. Account fields accept only digits.
- Different phone number to your registered Betika account. The deposit credits the account whose phone number you entered, not yours. If a friend asks you to fund their account, enter their number, but be clear it's their account, not yours.
- Bonus opt-in confusion. First-deposit bonuses sometimes require a minimum amount or an opt-in code. Check Betika's current promotion page before depositing if a bonus matters to you.
Before you deposit, set a limit
Betika offers deposit-limit tools. In My Account → Responsible Gaming, set a daily, weekly, or monthly cap before you deposit. The limit is enforced server-side. Increasing a limit requires a 24-72 hour cooling-off period, that's deliberate.
Consider what you'd be comfortable losing on entertainment in a month. Set the deposit cap there. Bet within it. If the cap feels restrictive after a losing day, that feeling is exactly what the cap is designed to push back against.
