Hakikisha M-PESA Explained: Cancel Does NOT Stop the Send (2026)

Hakikisha gives you 25 seconds to abort an M-PESA transaction, but the Cancel button is a UX trap. Here is what actually stops the send.

Pressing Cancel, Dismiss, or Close does NOT stop an M-PESA transaction. To reverse Hakikisha within the 25-second window, you must send ANY letter or number back to M-PESA. Hakikisha is Safaricom's 25-second delay that runs after you confirm a Send Money, Withdraw, Deposit, or Pay Bill. The popup shows the recipient's registered name so you can catch a wrong number before settlement. The Cancel button on the popup only closes the popup; it does not reach the M-PESA gateway. Reply with a character (any character) and the transaction aborts.

What Hakikisha is (and why it exists)

Hakikisha (Swahili for "verify" or "confirm") is a 25-second delay Safaricom introduced in 2015 after a wave of typo-scams and mistaken sends. The mechanic is simple:

  1. You initiate a Send, Withdraw, Deposit, Buy Goods, or Pay Bill.
  2. M-PESA looks up the recipient name from the registered mobile number, till number, or paybill.
  3. A popup appears on your phone showing the recipient's name and the amount.
  4. You have 25 seconds to abort if the name or amount is wrong.
  5. If you do nothing, the transaction settles at the end of 25 seconds and the money is delivered.

The whole point is to give you a chance to catch:

  • A typo (0712345678 instead of 0712345687).
  • A look-alike scam paybill (400200 vs 400220).
  • A spoofed name in a WhatsApp forward asking for money.
  • A recipient whose registered name does not match who you thought you were paying.

How to actually abort the transaction

Every M-PESA-menu and USSD interface (and, since 2023, the M-PESA app) presents the Hakikisha popup with what looks like Cancel, Dismiss, or Close options. These are misleading. The rule is:

ActionWhat it actually does
Reply with any letter or number (e.g. type "0" and send)Reaches M-PESA gateway with an abort instruction. Transaction cancelled.
Press Cancel / Dismiss / Close / Back on the popupCloses the popup on your device. Transaction continues on the network and settles after 25 seconds.
Do nothing for 25 secondsTransaction settles. Money delivered.
Switch off the phoneDoes not stop the transaction. It was already handed off to the M-PESA gateway when you entered your PIN.
Remove the SIMDoes not stop the transaction. Same reason.
Reply with the wrong PINDoes not stop the transaction. The PIN was already validated at initiation.

Which M-PESA transactions trigger Hakikisha

  • Send Money to another M-PESA user or unregistered number.
  • Withdraw at Agent.
  • Deposit at Agent.
  • Buy Goods (Lipa na M-PESA till).
  • Pay Bill (all paybills, including Government 222222).

Transactions that do not trigger Hakikisha:

  • Buy Airtime (for yourself or others).
  • M-Shwari and KCB M-PESA transfers.
  • Fuliza repayment (deducts automatically).
  • Incoming receipts (someone sending money to you).
  • Standing orders and scheduled paybills you set up in the M-PESA app.

Opting out of Hakikisha (and why you should not)

Safaricom lets customers turn Hakikisha off via *234# → My Account → Hakikisha. The setting is a personal preference, not per-transaction.

If you missed the 25-second window

If the transaction settled before you could react, your only recourse is the reversal flow:

  1. Dial *234# immediately.
  2. Select My Account → Reverse Transaction.
  3. Enter the 10-character M-PESA transaction code from the confirmation SMS.
  4. Confirm with your PIN.

Reversal is free. It works in 24 to 72 hours if the recipient agrees or 5 to 7 days automatically if the recipient is unregistered. Success drops sharply if the recipient has already withdrawn the money.
