The official Betika M-PESA paybill is 290290. Deposits via this paybill normally credit your Betika wallet within 30 seconds of M-PESA confirming. When that does not happen, the cause is almost always one of five things, and the recovery path depends on which. This guide covers the recipient-name check that diagnoses the issue in 10 seconds, the scam paybill variants pretending to be Betika, the Betika support escalation that recovers genuine deposits, and the M-PESA reversal flow when the funds went to a scammer.
Three checks before you escalate
- Did the M-PESA SMS arrive with a 10-character transaction code? If yes (e.g.
RG7HX9BC2K), the payment is accepted by Safaricom. If no SMS after 5 minutes, the payment failed and your wallet was not debited. Retry. - Does the SMS recipient name read BETIKA KENYA? That is the legitimate recipient of paybill 290290. If the recipient is any other business or a personal name, you paid a scam paybill. Ask Safaricom for a reversal (see below).
- Was the account field correct? Either the literal word
BETIKAor your Betika-registered Safaricom phone number, no spaces, no plus sign. The deposit credits to the Betika wallet whose phone number was in the account field.
The scam paybill variants targeting Betika
Betika's 290290 is one of the most-typed paybills in Kenya, which makes it a top target for look-alike scams. Variants seen circulating on WhatsApp, TikTok, and in some agent shops:
- 290291: single trailing digit, not Betika
- 290290 typed with a leading or trailing space: rejected by M-PESA in some flows, but can route to a different paybill in others
- 209290 or 290920: digits reordered
- 290295, 290298: trailing-digit variants
- "Betika new paybill" SMS or social media posts: always fake. Betika has not changed its paybill in years.
Confirm 290290 on the Betika app, betika.com, or our Betika paybill page before paying any number you have not used before. The single safest habit is to save 290290 in your phone contacts with a clear label so M-PESA autocompletes it.
The five causes of a missing Betika deposit
Before working through them, rule out a platform-wide problem. If Betika is down, none of the five applies and retrying only ties up more money: is Betika down right now?
1. Reconciliation lag (most common, harmless)
Most Betika deposits via 290290 credit within 30 seconds. During peak traffic (Friday evenings, weekends, big-fixture days), reconciliation can extend to 30 minutes. Wait first; the deposit usually lands without intervention.
2. Wrong paybill (a scam, recoverable via Safaricom reversal)
The M-PESA SMS recipient is not BETIKA KENYA. You paid into a scam paybill. The funds reached a real M-PESA account, just not Betika's. Recovery needs a reversal through Safaricom customer care (see below).
3. Wrong account number (recoverable via Betika support)
You paid 290290 but typed someone else's phone number (or a typo of yours) in the account field. The deposit credited the wrong Betika wallet. Betika can manually re-allocate if you have the M-PESA transaction code and proof of which wallet should have received it.
4. KYC mismatch hold
If your Betika account was flagged for re-verification (mismatch between your registered name and the M-PESA registered name, for instance), deposits can be held in a suspense account pending KYC review. Complete the verification in the app, then contact support to release the held deposit.
5. Payment not actually completed
Some M-PESA flows show a "request received" screen that looks like a confirmation but is not. Always wait for the M-PESA SMS with a 10-character transaction code before considering the deposit submitted.
Escalation path: when funds reached Betika
If the M-PESA SMS shows BETIKA KENYA as recipient but the wallet has not credited after 30 minutes:
- Open Betika live chat (in-app or on betika.com). Live chat is the fastest channel; expect a response within minutes during business hours.
- Provide: the M-PESA transaction code, the amount, the date and time, your Betika-registered phone number, and the account field value you used (BETIKA or phone number).
- Betika risk team verifies the payment landed (they can see it instantly in their ledger) and credits manually. Most cases resolve within 1 to 4 hours, occasionally up to 24 hours during high-volume periods.
- If live chat is unavailable, email support@betika.com with the same details. Response time runs to 24 hours.
Recovering a deposit that went to a scam paybill
If the M-PESA SMS recipient is not BETIKA KENYA, Betika cannot help; the funds never reached them. The recovery path is a reversal request to Safaricom customer care on 100 (200 on postpay).
- Call Safaricom customer care on
100(200on postpay). The 456 self-reversal covers person-to-person sends only, not paybills. - Give them the M-PESA transaction code from the SMS.
- Safaricom contacts the recipient (the scam paybill operator) for consent before reversing.
- Outcome: the recipient can refuse. Safaricom publishes no timeline for this kind of reversal and no promise of recovery.
If the recipient refuses, the remaining path is a police report (keep the OB number with your M-PESA code) and a civil claim, which is rarely worth the effort for typical deposit amounts. The right defensive move is to verify the paybill before sending, not to rely on reversal after.
FAQ
I paid Betika via M-PESA but the deposit is not showing in my wallet. What now?
First, check your M-PESA SMS. The recipient name must read BETIKA KENYA. If it shows any other name, you paid a scam paybill, not Betika. Call Safaricom on 100 with the M-PESA code and ask for a reversal. The 456 self-reversal only covers person-to-person sends. If the recipient is BETIKA KENYA and 30 minutes have passed, contact Betika support on live chat with the M-PESA transaction code and your Betika-registered phone number.
What is the official Betika paybill in Kenya?
The official Betika paybill is 290290, with account either the literal word BETIKA or your Betika-registered Safaricom phone number. Both work. Anything other than 290290 is not Betika. Variants like 290291 or 209290 circulating on WhatsApp and TikTok are scams.
How long should I wait before assuming the Betika deposit failed?
Most Betika deposits via paybill 290290 credit within 30 seconds of M-PESA confirming. Beyond 30 minutes is unusual. Between 30 minutes and 2 hours, Betika reconciliation is the most common cause and the deposit normally lands without intervention. Beyond 2 hours, escalate to Betika support with the M-PESA transaction code.
I used my wife/friend's phone to send the deposit. Why did Betika not credit?
Betika credits the deposit to the wallet whose registered phone number was entered as the account, not to the M-PESA account that sent the funds. If your friend's phone sent the deposit but the Betika account field showed your phone number, the funds went to your Betika wallet. Check both accounts. If the account field had your friend's number, the funds went to their wallet, even though you sent the money from your M-PESA.
My M-PESA SMS shows the recipient as a person's name, not BETIKA KENYA. What does this mean?
You paid the wrong paybill. The legitimate Betika paybill receives funds in the name BETIKA KENYA. If the recipient is a person's name (or any other business), you paid into someone's personal M-PESA registered as a paybill. Almost certainly a scam paybill posted on WhatsApp or TikTok pretending to be Betika. Call Safaricom on 100 straight away with the M-PESA code and ask for a reversal. The 456 self-reversal does not cover paybills.
Can Betika manually credit my deposit if it lands in the wrong account?
Yes, if the funds reached the genuine Betika paybill 290290. Email support@betika.com or use live chat with the M-PESA transaction code, the Betika account field you typed, and your correct Betika-registered phone number. Betika support can manually re-allocate within 24 hours. If the funds went to a scam paybill, Betika cannot help; the recovery path is a Safaricom reversal.
I get "Insufficient balance" when depositing. What does it mean?
Your M-PESA wallet does not cover the deposit plus the paybill tariff. Safaricom's paybill charge rises with the amount, from KES 0 to 10 up to KES 1,000 to KES 108 from KES 45,001, and the business chooses who pays it. Top up your M-PESA wallet via agent or bank-to-M-PESA, or use Fuliza if enabled.
Can I deposit to Betika from a different network (Airtel, Telkom)?
Yes, via Airtel-Safaricom M-PESA interoperability. Pay paybill 290290 from Airtel Money the same way. The Betika account field still needs your Safaricom registered phone number (Betika accounts are tied to Safaricom lines).
My deposit shows in Betika but the wrong amount. What now?
Almost always either the paybill fee was deducted (so the M-PESA SMS amount and the Betika credit differ by the fee) or a partial reversal was processed. Check the M-PESA SMS carefully. If the amounts genuinely do not reconcile, contact Betika support with both the M-PESA code and the Betika transaction reference.
How do I avoid scam Betika paybills in the future?
Only use 290290. Save it as a contact in your phone with a clear label. Never trust paybills sent via WhatsApp, TikTok, or SMS unless they exactly match 290290. Verify on the Betika app, betika.com, or our Betika paybill page before using any number you have not used before. If you see "new Betika paybill" being promoted on social media, it is a scam.
