To reverse an Airtel Money transaction, dial *334#, choose My Account, then Reverse Transaction. If it fails, call 100. Enter the transaction ID from your original confirmation SMS and confirm with your Airtel Money PIN. There is no fee, the original charge is refunded if the reversal succeeds, and auto-reversal typically clears within 60 seconds when the recipient is unregistered or has not withdrawn.
Time window
Airtel Money's reversal engine is fastest when the money has not moved. Realistic windows:
| Scenario | Outcome | Typical time |
|---|---|---|
| Recipient is unregistered on Airtel Money | Auto-reversal | Within 60 seconds |
| Recipient registered, has not withdrawn | Prompted to accept | 1 to 24 hours |
| Recipient ignores the prompt | Manual escalation | 24 to 72 hours |
| Recipient has withdrawn cash | Fraud case | Days to weeks, low success |
Step by step: *334#
- Dial
*334#from the Airtel line that made the transaction. - Choose My Account.
- Choose Reverse Transaction.
- Enter the transaction ID from your original Airtel Money SMS.
- Confirm with your Airtel Money PIN.
- Wait for the outcome SMS. If auto-reversal succeeds, funds appear in your wallet within a minute.
The USSD path works on any phone, feature or smart. No data is required, and you do not need the Airtel Money app.
If the recipient has already withdrawn
Once the recipient walks into an agent and cashes out, auto-reversal is impossible. Move to fraud escalation:
- Call 100 from your Airtel line (free) or +254 733 100 100 from any Kenyan number. Ask for the fraud team.
- Provide the transaction ID, recipient number, amount, and time. Request escalation, not just a case number.
- Visit an Airtel shop with your national ID and a printout or screenshot of the SMS. In-person filings move faster than phone-only ones.
- File a police report at the nearest station and get the OB (Occurrence Book) number. Airtel will not release recipient KYC data without it.
- Report to the DCI Cyber Crime Unit if the fraud involved impersonation, a fake job, or an online scam.
Recovery odds mirror M-PESA: highest when the recipient used a registered SIM tied to a real ID, the amount is material, and you acted within the first hour.
Cross-network reversals (Airtel to M-PESA and back)
Airtel to M-PESA (and M-PESA to Airtel) transfers settle instantly on the receiving network. There is no unified reversal system, so:
- Call the sending network first (Airtel on 100 if you sent from Airtel). They can flag the case and issue a request.
- Call the receiving network next. Ask them to place a hold on the recipient wallet. Safaricom's number is 100 from a Safaricom line or 234 from any Kenyan number.
- Do this within minutes. Cross-network holds are rarely granted after 24 hours.
- Follow up in writing (email) with both operators to create a paper trail. Airtel: customerservice@ke.airtel.com. Safaricom fraud: mpesafraud@safaricom.co.ke.
Realistic timeline for cross-network cases: 24 to 72 hours if both operators cooperate and the recipient has not withdrawn. Much longer if they have.
Fee
There is no reversal fee. Airtel refunds the original transaction charge when the reversal succeeds. If it fails, the original charge is retained.

Prevention
- Read the confirmation name. Airtel Money shows the recipient name before your PIN prompt, the same principle as M-PESA's Hakikisha.
- Type numbers manually. Copy-paste from WhatsApp can carry invisible characters or a clipboard hijack.
- Call back on large sends. Anything above KES 20,000 deserves a voice check.
- Save trusted contacts in the Airtel Money app for repeat sends.
- Verify Paybills at source. Do not trust Paybills or till numbers shared in DMs.
