Withdrawals are where Betika and other Kenyan operators are tested. The deposit side is simple; the withdrawal side is where verification, payout speed, and customer support actually matter. This guide walks through the full flow, the verification you need, the tax mechanics that make your final cash-in-hand smaller than your wallet balance, and what to do if a withdrawal stalls.
Before you can withdraw
Two things must be true before Betika will pay out to M-PESA:
- Your account is verified. Betika requires identity verification (KYC) before approving withdrawals. Upload a clear photo of your national ID (front and back) and a selfie holding the ID. Verification is usually completed within 24-48 hours.
- Your withdrawable balance is at or above the minimum (KES 200).Distinct from total balance, bonus money, locked promotional credit, and pending bets aren't withdrawable. Look for "Withdrawable balance" in the app, not just "Account balance."
Step-by-step withdrawal
- Open the Betika Android app or log in at betika.com on mobile.
- Tap the menu icon → My Account → Withdraw.
- Choose M-PESA as the withdrawal method.
- Enter the withdrawal amount in KES. Watch the displayed available balance, not your full account balance.
- Confirm the destination Safaricom phone number. The number must match your registered Betika account; you can't withdraw to a different number.
- Enter your Betika password (or two-factor code if enabled) to authorise.
- Tap Confirm.
You receive a Betika SMS confirming the withdrawal request, then an M-PESA SMS once the payout reaches your wallet. Typical end-to-end time: 5-30 minutes during business hours. Late-night and weekend withdrawals may take longer; very large withdrawals occasionally take up to 24 hours for additional review.
Limits
- Minimum withdrawal: KES 200.
- Per-transaction maximum: KES 70,000 typical, but bound by M-PESA's per-transaction cap of KES 250,000 minus any account-tier limits Betika applies. Larger withdrawals are split into multiple M-PESA payouts automatically.
- Daily / weekly limits: tier-dependent. New accounts have lower daily caps; long-tenured verified accounts can withdraw materially more.
Withdrawal tax on every withdrawal
Under the Finance Act 2025, a flat 5% withdrawal tax applies to every withdrawal from a Kenyan betting wallet to M-PESA or bank, regardless of whether the funds represent winnings or your original stake. Betika deducts this automatically before paying out. The previous 20% withholding tax on winnings (which only applied above KES 5,000 in winnings) was replaced by the new flat 5%.
For example, if you stake KES 1,000 at odds 10.0 and win, the gross return to your wallet is KES 10,000. When you withdraw the KES 10,000, Betika deducts 5% = KES 500. Net to M-PESA: KES 9,500. Note: there are also 5% deposit and 5% stake-side excises applied earlier in the cycle, see the full mechanics below.

When a withdrawal is stuck
Most stuck withdrawals fall into one of these patterns:
- First withdrawal, KYC review. First withdrawals on a new account often go through additional verification that takes up to 24 hours. Subsequent withdrawals on a verified account are much faster.
- Suspected duplicate or under-age account. Betika is required by GRA to confirm one account per person. If your selfie doesn't match the ID photo cleanly or if there's a flag of multiple accounts on one ID, the withdrawal pauses. Resolved by uploading a fresh, clear selfie.
- Mismatch between Betika number and M-PESA number. The Safaricom number on the M-PESA payout must match the number registered to your Betika account. If you recently changed your registered number on Betika, the system may need a verification period before approving payouts to the new number.
- Operator outage or partial M-PESA downtime. Withdrawals queue and pay out once the rail is back. Usually resolved within a few hours.
For each, the resolution is the same: contact Betika support with your withdrawal reference number. Live chat in the app is fastest. Email support@betika.com works for non-urgent cases.
Patterns worth thinking about
Two subtle dynamics around withdrawals that don't get talked about often enough:
- Frequency vs amount. A KES 1,000 weekly withdrawal pattern is healthier than a KES 8,000 withdrawal once a quarter, you keep the wins out of the wallet, reducing the temptation to chase losses. But the M-PESA fees on small frequent withdrawals are higher in aggregate.
- Withdrawal as a check on yourself. If you find yourself postponing a withdrawal because you want "just one more bet first," that's data. The mental gap between deciding to withdraw and actually doing so is one of the cleaner self-checks on your own behaviour.
Set a withdrawal habit, not just a deposit limit
Most responsible-gambling advice focuses on deposit limits, and they matter. But a withdrawal habit is just as useful. A simple rule: withdraw the original stake amount the moment you have it back, regardless of further winnings on the same balance. That way the worst case is breaking even on a session, not chasing back a loss with house money.
