How to withdraw from SportPesa to M-PESA in 2026: full step-by-step

Before you can withdraw

Three prerequisites. All non-negotiable.

• KYC complete. Your National ID (or passport / Alien ID) uploaded and approved on your SportPesa profile. Without verified KYC, withdrawals are blocked. KYC takes 24 to 48 hours; complete it before you need to withdraw.
• Phone number matches. The withdrawal routes only to the M-PESA number registered on your SportPesa account. You cannot route to a friend's M-PESA; this is a fraud-prevention block, not a configurable setting.
• Available balance. Bonus funds are not withdrawable until rollover is cleared. Only the cleared real-money balance is available for withdrawal.

The withdrawal flow

1. Open the SportPesa app or ke.sportpesa.com.
2. Tap Withdraw in the main menu or account area.
3. Enter the amount you want to withdraw. The screen usually shows the 5% excise deduction so you see the net.
4. Confirm. SportPesa processes the request and routes to your registered M-PESA number.
5. Wait for the M-PESA SMS. Typical arrival is 3 to 5 minutes for KYC-verified accounts; the upper end of normal is 30 minutes.

The 5% withdrawal excise (Finance Act 2025)

The Finance Act 2025 replaced the previous 20% withholding tax on winnings with a 5% excise on every withdrawal from a Kenyan betting operator. The operator deducts at source before the funds reach your M-PESA; the net you receive is the gross withdrawal minus 5%.

Example: you request a KES 1,000 withdrawal. SportPesa deducts KES 50 (5%) as excise. M-PESA receives KES 950. The 5% goes to the Kenya Revenue Authority via the operator.

Limits and timing

• Per-transaction. Subject to M-PESA per-transaction cap (KES 250,000) and SportPesa's account-tier limit.
• Daily limit. Depends on your KYC tier. Tier 1 (standard verified) typically caps at KES 250,000 daily; higher-tier accounts have larger caps after enhanced KYC submission.
• Frequency. No hard limit on number of withdrawals per day, but high-frequency small withdrawals can trigger fraud-watch holds.
• Timing. 3 to 5 minutes typical, 30 minutes upper edge of normal. Past 30 minutes, escalate.

When the withdrawal stalls

1. Check Transaction History. My Account → Transactions. The withdrawal will show as Pending, Processing, Successful, or Rejected. If Rejected, read the reason field and act on it.
2. Confirm KYC is approved. If KYC is not yet approved, withdrawals are blocked entirely. Re-check the KYC status in your account.
3. Confirm phone number matches. Verify the M-PESA number on your account profile matches the SIM you expect the funds on. A mismatch is the most common failure cause.
4. Check daily limit. If you have already withdrawn close to your daily cap, the next request is blocked until the cap resets at midnight EAT.
5. Wait the full 30 minutes. Most reconciliation issues clear in this window even without intervention.
6. Escalate to SportPesa support. Provide the withdrawal reference number from Transaction History, the amount, and the timestamp. Use the in-app support form or the official support page at ke.sportpesa.com.
7. Last-resort: GRA mediation. If support is unresponsive past 7 days on a confirmed-fault issue, file with the Gambling Regulatory Authority at gra.go.ke; they accept player complaints against licensed operators and typically respond in 14 working days.
