An M-PESA account becomes dormant after 6 months without a customer-initiated transaction. To reclaim a dormant balance, dial *234#, choose My Account, then Dormancy Reactivation, and confirm with your ID number. The reactivation is free. Access to the balance is restored within 24 to 72 hours. Funds are never forfeited; if the wallet stays dormant for years, the balance is transferred to the Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFAA) rather than kept by Safaricom, and you can still claim it there.
What Safaricom counts as "dormant"
M-PESA classifies a wallet as dormant when the customer has not initiated a transaction for 6 consecutive months. Only outgoing, customer-driven activity counts:
| Counts as activity (resets the 6-month clock) | Does NOT count |
|---|---|
| Send Money | Someone sending money to you |
| Withdraw (Agent or ATM) | Interest credited by M-Shwari or KCB M-PESA |
| Buy Goods (Lipa na M-PESA Till) | Reversal credited to your wallet |
| Pay Bill | System notifications and marketing SMS |
| Buy Airtime (for self or others) | Balance check via *234# |
| M-Shwari / KCB M-PESA / Fuliza loan repayment | Failed / cancelled transactions |
Safaricom typically sends an SMS warning at around the 5-month mark advising that the account is about to be marked dormant. The wallet does not vanish, it just goes into a restricted state where you cannot Send, Withdraw, or Pay until you reactivate.
Reactivate via *234# (all phones)
- Dial
*234#on the Safaricom line the M-PESA is registered under. - Select My Account.
- Select Dormancy Reactivation (menu item is sometimes titled "Reactivate M-PESA" depending on the menu version).
- Enter your national ID number exactly as it appears on the SIM registration.
- Confirm with your M-PESA PIN.
- Wait for the confirmation SMS. If the wallet is in a simple dormant state, it is usable within minutes. If it needs manual review, expect 24 to 72 hours.
USSD works on any Safaricom-registered phone, including feature phones. No data needed. This is the recommended path if you are in a rural area or your line has already been restricted from data.
Reactivate via the M-PESA app
- Open the M-PESA app and log in. If the app rejects the login with a "dormant account" error, tap the prompt to reactivate.
- Go to Profile → Account Status → Reactivate.
- Confirm ID and PIN.
In practice the USSD path is faster because the app can refuse login until reactivation is complete on the network side.
Reactivate at a Safaricom shop
Use this route when:
- You lost the original SIM (you need a SIM swap first).
- The ID on the SIM registration is out of date (e.g. old ID number, marriage name change).
- The USSD path returns an error such as "Please visit your nearest Safaricom shop".
- The wallet has been dormant for more than 12 months and needs manual re-KYC.
Bring your original national ID (not a photocopy or eCitizen printout). The shop agent will verify your identity, re-run KYC on iPRS, and reactivate the wallet on the spot. There is no fee for reactivation itself; a SIM swap costs KES 50.
How long before I see my balance?
- Simple dormancy (6 to 12 months, no KYC issues): minutes to a few hours after the *234# reactivation completes.
- Long dormancy (12 to 24 months): 24 to 72 hours as the case is reviewed by the M-PESA back-office.
- Very long dormancy (2+ years) or KYC mismatch: 3 to 14 business days, usually requires a shop visit.
- Funds already transferred to UFAA (typically after 2 to 5 years):you claim from the Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority at ufaa.go.ke. Turnaround is 30 to 90 days.
Stop it from happening again
- Perform any *234# transaction (even KES 20 airtime to yourself) once every 5 months. This is the cheapest way to keep the clock reset.
- Set up a recurring small transfer, for example a KES 100 monthly top-up into an M-Shwari lock savings, so activity is automatic.
- If you use your Safaricom line only occasionally, add it to the M-PESA app on a smartphone so you get in-app dormancy warnings, not just SMS.
- If the line is a secondary or diaspora line, ask a trusted family member to run a KES 10 top-up on your behalf. Airtime purchased for someone else still counts as activity on the sender's wallet.
