Money sent from abroad can land straight in an Airtel Money wallet through Airtel's international money-transfer partners. The sender uses a licensed remittance service or app that pays out to mobile wallets in Kenya, selects Airtel Money, and enters the Kenyan Airtel number. The money arrives in that Airtel Money account, ready to spend, send or withdraw. The receiver does not need to do anything except have an active, registered Airtel Money line.
Step by step
- Pick an IMT partner. The sender abroad picks a remittance service that pays out to Airtel Money Kenya (Sendwave, Remitly, WorldRemit, Wise, TapTap Send and others: check partner support for Airtel Money specifically).
- Choose Kenya → mobile wallet → Airtel Money. In the app, choose Kenya, then mobile wallet, then Airtel Money as the payout method.
- Enter number + amount. Enter the receiver's Airtel number (with country code) and the amount to send.
- Confirm. The money lands in the receiver's Airtel Money, usually within minutes. Both sides get an SMS confirmation.
What the receiver should check
Make sure your Airtel Money is registered and active, and that your number is correct to the last digit. There may be a receive limit tied to your account tier and the KES 500,000 balance cap. Keep the confirmation message. If money is delayed, the sender should raise it with the service they used, using their reference.
