M-Shwari lets you borrow KES 1,000 to KES 50,000 for 30 days, at 9 percent total (7.5 percent facility fee plus 1.5 percent excise). You save at up to 6.3 percent per year. Dial *334# to borrow. Safaricom's own site also shows a KES 1,000,000 maximum in some places; that figure is inconsistent with the KES 50,000 shown elsewhere. Use the M-PESA acceptance screen as the authoritative amount.

Who runs M-Shwari

M-Shwari is a joint product of NCBA Bank Kenya PLC, a CBK-licensed commercial bank, and Safaricom PLC. Loans are NCBA banking loans surfaced through the M-PESA menu. Deposits sit as NCBA banking balances under the M-Shwari brand.

How the product works

Access from the M-PESA menu: dial *334#, pick Loans and Savings, then M-Shwari, then Loan. Standard tenure is 30 days. The confirmation screen shows principal, fee, and total repayable before you enter your PIN.

Repayment is via M-PESA to M-Shwari. Rollover means a fresh application at the end of 30 days with a new facility fee. There is no compounding on the original loan; each 30-day period is a separate facility.

Pricing

The headline is a one-off 7.5 percent facility fee on the disbursed amount for the standard 30-day loan, plus 1.5 percent excise, totalling 9 percent of principal. On a KES 10,000 loan you pay back KES 10,900 in 30 days. Annualised via the effective APR method, that is materially higher than a bank overdraft but lower than most app-based lenders. See our effective APR guide for the annualising method.

Limits and minimums

Minimum M-Shwari loan is KES 1,000. Starting individual limits for new users can be as low as KES 1,000 to KES 5,000, growing with M-PESA transaction history and M-Shwari savings behaviour. Practical ceilings for most retail users are well below the KES 50,000 figure Safaricom publishes; established borrowers report seeing that as a hard cap. Safaricom's own site elsewhere states a KES 1,000,000 maximum; we cannot reconcile the two and the working assumption for most borrowers is KES 50,000.

If you need more than KES 50,000, KCB M-PESA (KES 1,000,000 published ceiling) is the natural next step in the M-PESA menu.

Savings arm

M-Shwari is also a savings account. Interest of up to 6.3 percent per year applies on the daily balance (NCBA-published rate). No fees on deposit; withdrawal to M-PESA is free but you pay the standard M-PESA withdrawal tariff once the money moves from M-PESA to cash. See our M-Shwari 52-week challenge for a structured savings plan.

Who M-Shwari suits

For 30-day loans between KES 1,000 and KES 50,000, M-Shwari is one of the cheaper mainstream options for borrowers with an M-PESA transaction history. It is bank-backed, so if the lender misbehaves you have a clear channel through NCBA and CBK. Weak fit for borrowers without an M-PESA transaction history (the scoring uses M-PESA patterns) and for borrowers needing above KES 50,000.

Common issues

  • Declined despite clean CRB. M-PESA transaction volume is a strong signal; low activity suppresses the limit. See why your M-PESA loan limit is zero.
  • Repayment not reflected. Verify the M-PESA transaction reference; NCBA reconciles within 24 hours in practice.
  • Fee looks higher than 7.5 percent. The 1.5 percent excise on top brings the total to 9 percent. That is the true cost.

If something goes wrong

  1. Contact NCBA via published channels. Keep the M-PESA reference.
  2. Escalate to CBK Consumer Protection on 0800 720 000 if unresolved within 15 working days.
