KCB M-PESA lets you borrow KES 100 to KES 1,000,000 for 30 days, at 8.93 percent facility fee. Passport-registered users cannot apply. Dial *334# to borrow. KCB M-PESA has the highest published maximum of any M-PESA mobile loan and the widest floor (KES 100 minimum, versus KES 1,000 on M-Shwari).

Who runs KCB M-PESA

KCB M-PESA is a joint product of KCB Bank Kenya Ltd, a CBK-licensed commercial bank, and Safaricom PLC, the M-PESA operator. The loan is a KCB banking product surfaced through the M-PESA menu. Deposit-taking, supervision, and CRB reporting all sit with KCB.

How the product works

Dial *334#, pick Loans and Savings, then KCB M-PESA. On first use you accept the KCB terms and are scored for a limit. Loans disburse from KCB straight into your M-PESA and are repaid via M-PESA to KCB.

Standard tenure is 30 days with a facility fee of 8.93 percent. Rollover requires a fresh application at the end of the term. Ceiling grows with M-PESA transaction history and KCB banking history combined.

Pricing

A facility fee of 8.93 percent applied to the disbursed amount, all-in for 30 days. On a KES 100,000 loan you pay back KES 108,930. For the annualised comparison across all Kenyan lenders, see the paybillke effective APR guide.

Limits and minimums

Minimum KCB M-PESA loan: KES 100. Maximum: KES 1,000,000. Starting limits for new users are typically KES 1,000 to KES 10,000. Ceiling grows with (a) M-PESA transaction volume, (b) KCB banking history, and (c) on-time KCB M-PESA repayment.

The KES 1,000,000 headline is materially higher than M-Shwari, Tala, Branch, or Zenka. If you need above KES 1,000,000, you are into formal bank loan territory (not a mobile menu product).

Eligibility

  • Active on the Safaricom network for at least 6 months with M-PESA usage.
  • Registered with a Kenyan national ID. Passport-registered customers are blocked (KCB Bank policy).
  • No adverse CRB listing with KCB (CRB reports read across the bank's consumer credit).
  • KCB M-PESA opt-in completed.

Who KCB M-PESA suits

The best pick in the M-PESA menu for loans between KES 5,000 and KES 1,000,000 for borrowers registered on Safaricom with a national ID. If you can borrow smaller amounts (under KES 5,000) that clear inside a week, Fuliza is cheaper. For KES 5,000 to KES 50,000 M-Shwari is marginally cheaper but only if your M-Shwari limit stretches that far.

Common issues

  • Loan disbursed but M-PESA short. Check M-PESA statement; loans usually land within seconds. If not visible after 10 minutes, contact Safaricom customer care 100 or KCB 0711 087 000.
  • Declined despite clean CRB. The score also uses M-PESA transaction patterns; low volume suppresses the limit.
  • Menu shows Activate not Loan. First-time KCB M-PESA users have to opt in and accept KCB terms before a limit is assigned.

If something goes wrong

  1. Contact KCB customer service via published channels. Keep the M-PESA transaction reference.
  2. Escalate to the KCB Banking Ombudsman channel published on kcbgroup.com.
  3. If unresolved, complain to CBK Consumer Protection on 0800 720 000.
