Save KES 50 in week 1, KES 100 in week 2, KES 150 in week 3, and continue adding KES 50 each week. By week 52 you save KES 2,600 that week and reach KES 68,900 total, plus 6 percent M-Shwari interest per year. The full 52-row schedule is below.

How the challenge works

  1. Every week, deposit KES 50 more than you did last week.
  2. Week 1 is KES 50. Week 2 is KES 100. Week 3 is KES 150. Week 52 is KES 2,600.
  3. Total principal saved after 52 weeks: KES 68,900.
  4. M-Shwari applies its published interest rate on the daily balance across the year. At 6 percent per year applied to the growing balance, the interest earned is approximately KES 2,100 to KES 2,200 (the exact figure depends on when you deposit each week).
  5. End of year: about KES 71,000 in your M-Shwari, from nothing to that in 12 months, purely on discipline.

How to deposit into M-Shwari

  1. Dial *334#. Select 4. Loans and Savings, then 1. M-Shwari, then 1. Send to M-Shwari.
  2. Type the week's amount.
  3. Enter your M-PESA PIN. Confirmation SMS lands within seconds.

No fees. No transaction tax. The amount moves from your M-PESA wallet to your M-Shwari savings account instantly.

The reverse version (front-loaded)

If your income is highest early in the year (annual bonus in January, salary review in April) reverse the schedule. Week 1 = KES 2,600, Week 2 = KES 2,550, all the way to Week 52 = KES 50. Same total (KES 68,900), same interest, easier if December is your tightest month.

Two common modifications

  • Double-value challenge. Multiply every weekly amount by 2. Week 1 = KES 100, Week 52 = KES 5,200. Total = KES 137,800.
  • Halved challenge. Divide every weekly amount by 2. Week 1 = KES 25, Week 52 = KES 1,300. Total = KES 34,450. Good for students or part-time earners.

Stack it with M-Shwari Lock Savings

Once you have KES 20,000 or more sitting in the standard M-Shwari account, consider moving a portion into M-Shwari Lock Savings (a fixed-term deposit that pays a higher rate but you cannot withdraw before the term ends). This forces you to leave the growing pot alone.

Tool

Model different M-Shwari deposit patterns and see the interest projection with the paybillke M-PESA savings interest calculator (or use the general budget planner to plan weekly deposits inside your monthly budget).

  1. Safaricom PLC and NCBA Bank Kenya. M-Shwari product terms including savings rate (up to 6.3 percent per year) as displayed inside the M-PESA menu.
  2. Arithmetic: sum of an arithmetic series 50 + 100 + ... + 2600 = 50 x (52 x 53 / 2) = KES 68,900.

FAQ

How much do I save in the M-Shwari 52-week challenge?

KES 68,900 in principal deposits over 12 months, plus M-Shwari interest of up to 6.3 percent per year applied on the daily balance (or 6 percent for the standard M-Shwari savings account depending on plan). Interest accrues throughout the year, not at the end.

Do I have to deposit weekly on M-Shwari?

No. The 52-week schedule is a discipline tool, not an M-Shwari rule. You can deposit any amount, any frequency, into your M-Shwari account. The schedule guarantees that if you keep to it, you hit KES 68,900 in a year.

When should I start the M-Shwari 52-week challenge?

January is the traditional start (matches a calendar year), but the maths works from any Monday. Starting in September still gets you to KES 68,900 by the following September.

Can I do a reverse M-Shwari 52-week challenge?

Yes. Start with KES 2,600 in week 1 and drop by KES 50 each week. Same total savings (KES 68,900) with a front-loaded schedule. This is easier if income falls over the year (bonus in January, tight by December).
