Miss an M-PESA loan for 90 consecutive days (KCB M-PESA, M-Shwari, Fuliza Biashara) and the lender lists you on Kenya's CRB. Personal Fuliza does not directly CRB-list, but the underlying bank (NCBA or KCB) can list you if you default on any recovery plan they put in place. Once listed, the record stays 5 years after full settlement unless you obtain a Certificate of Clearance.

Day-by-day default timeline

Days past dueWhat happens
Day 1 to 15SMS reminders from the bank. Further borrowing on the same product blocked. Rollover requires a fresh application.
Day 16 to 30Late fee added on the underlying facility. Personal Fuliza remains automatically deducting from any incoming M-PESA credit.
Day 31 to 60Bank collection team calls. All other M-PESA loan products may still work; the flag is per-lender until CRB reporting.
Day 61 to 89Pre-listing notice served. This is the last window to negotiate a repayment plan without a CRB record.
Day 90 onwardsBank reports adverse status to the CRB. Other bank-backed lenders start declining you.
5 years after full settlementCRB removes the adverse entry automatically. Certificate of Clearance can accelerate specific decisions but does not shorten the 5-year window.

What being CRB-listed actually blocks

  • Bank-underwritten mobile loans. M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, Fuliza Biashara, Timiza, HFC Whizz will decline you.
  • Formal bank loans. Personal loans, car loans, asset finance all check CRB.
  • Some digital credit providers. Not all decline adversely-listed borrowers, but most CBK-licensed ones do.
  • Some employer background checks. Regulated financial-services roles and some government positions check CRB.

What CRB listing does not block

  • Personal Fuliza automatic engage. Personal Fuliza does not read CRB in real time. If you already had a Fuliza limit, it continues to engage on shortfalls until the bank suspends it.
  • M-PESA basic services. Send, receive, paybill, till, withdrawal, all continue.
  • SACCO loans (generally). Most SACCOs use member savings and guarantor structures, not CRB. Check the specific SACCO.

How to clear a CRB listing

Path 1: pay and wait 5 years

Pay the outstanding balance in full to the lender that reported you. The lender must update the CRB status from adverse to settled within 30 days. The record remains visible as settled for 5 years from the settlement date, then falls off automatically. This is the standard path when you can pay in full and are not urgently seeking new bank credit.

Path 2: pay and request a Certificate of Clearance

After paying in full, request a Certificate of Clearance from the CRB that holds your adverse record. The certificate confirms the debt is settled and is accepted by most banks as evidence when they run a manual review. It does not delete the underlying record but it typically unblocks new-loan approvals faster than waiting for the 5-year clock. Fee is set by each CRB (typically KES 500 to KES 2,200); check the CRB's current price sheet.

How to check your CRB status

  1. Request a free annual credit report from one of the three CBK-licensed CRBs: Metropol, TransUnion, or Creditinfo (per CBK Regulations).
  2. Metropol offers a paid instant check via *433# on any Kenyan network.
  3. Verify each of the three CRBs (they hold independent records; a listing on one may not appear on the others).
  4. Dispute inaccuracies in writing with the reporting lender first, then escalate to the CRB and to CBK Consumer Protection on 0800 720 000.

FAQ

After how many days does M-PESA loan default hit CRB?

Kenyan bank practice under CBK Credit Reference Bureau regulations reports adverse borrower information after 90 consecutive days of non-payment. KCB M-PESA, M-Shwari and Fuliza Biashara all follow this rule. Personal Fuliza has historically not directly CRB-listed for the overdraft itself, though the underlying bank can list you if you default on any subsequent repayment plan.

How long does a CRB listing stay?

CBK regulations remove adverse information 5 years after full settlement of the debt. Paying alone does not delist you; the 5-year window still runs from the settlement date unless you request a Certificate of Clearance after paying.

Does a CRB listing block me from all loans?

It blocks bank-underwritten mobile loans (M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, Fuliza Biashara, Timiza, HFC Whizz). Some CBK-licensed digital lenders still lend to adversely-listed borrowers but at higher rates. Employers running credit checks may see the listing.

How do I check if I am CRB-listed?

Request a free credit report once a year from any of the three licensed Kenyan CRBs (Metropol, TransUnion, Creditinfo). Metropol runs *433# for a paid check. CBK publishes the licensed CRB list on centralbank.go.ke.
