You can borrow without a payslip in Kenya. The mobile loans most people use, from M-Shwari to Tala, never ask for one. They decide on your M-PESA record and how you have repaid before. A payslip only matters for larger salary-backed loans from banks and SACCOs, where repayment is tied to your pay.

What they look at instead

  • How long you have used M-PESA. KCB M-PESA asks for six months of use before it gives you a limit.
  • How much moves through your line. Regular money in and out tells a lender more than a payslip would.
  • Your repayment record. On-time repayments raise limits; a late loan freezes them.
  • Your CRB record. A current default makes approval much harder. Check yours free.

When you need more than a mobile loan

For a bigger loan from a bank, microfinance bank or SACCO, you will be asked to show income some other way if you have no payslip. What usually works for self-employed people:

  1. An M-PESA statement for the months the lender asks for. See how to download your M-PESA statement.
  2. Bank statements for the same months, if your business money goes through a bank.
  3. Your KRA PIN, and business registration documents if you have them.
  4. For a SACCO, your savings record with them: SACCO loans are usually a multiple of what you have saved.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a loan in Kenya without a payslip?

Yes. M-Shwari, KCB M-PESA, Fuliza, Timiza, the Hustler Fund and licensed app lenders such as Tala, Branch and Zenka decide on your M-PESA and repayment record, not a payslip.

What do lenders check instead of a payslip?

Mostly how long you have used M-PESA, how much money moves through it, and how you have repaid before. KCB M-PESA, for example, wants six months of M-PESA use before it gives you a limit.

How do self-employed people prove income for a bigger loan?

With an M-PESA statement and bank statements showing regular money coming in, usually for several months, plus a KRA PIN. Ask the lender exactly which months it wants before you download anything.

Are loan apps that ask for no documents safe?

Only if they are licensed. Check the lender on the CBK list of digital credit providers, or that it is a bank product, before you give it any data.
