Is Opesa licensed by CBK? What the official directory shows

Opesa does not appear by name in CBK's list of licensed digital lenders. Here is what that means and how to check for yourself.

As of CBK's directory of 29 September 2026, Opesa is not listed as a licensed digital credit provider under that name. That is a statement about the directory, not a finding against anyone. Some lenders appear in the directory only under their registered company name, so an app can be licensed under a name you do not recognise.

The company name question

We could not find an official Opesa website or a current app listing that names the company behind it. Third-party websites are not a reliable way to settle this, so we have not relied on them. If Opesa is run by a licensed company under a different name, the app should be able to tell you that name.

What “not listed” means

A business that offers digital credit in Kenya needs a licence from CBK, and CBK's directory is the list of those licences. If an app is not in it, one of two things is true: it is run by a licensed company under a name CBK lists differently, or it is not licensed. You cannot tell which from the app name alone. That is why the next step matters.

How to check any loan app in two minutes

  1. In the app, its terms or its Google Play listing, find the registered company name, not the brand.
  2. Search that name in our list of CBK-licensed digital lenders, which copies CBK's directory, or use the CBK licence checker.
  3. For the original, open CBK's Directory of Digital Credit Providers, linked from CBK's bank supervision page.
  4. If the app will not give you a company name, or the name is not listed, do not borrow and do not give it access to your contacts or photos.

If this changes

CBK adds lenders to the directory several times a year. We re-check this page when a new directory is published. If you run Opesa and hold a CBK licence under another name, write to interconpublishers@gmail.com with the licensed company name and we will check it against the directory and update this page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Opesa licensed by CBK?

Opesa is not listed under that name in the Central Bank of Kenya Directory of Digital Credit Providers updated on 29 September 2026. That does not by itself prove it is unlicensed, because some lenders appear only under their company name. Ask the app for its registered company name and check that name in the directory.

Who owns Opesa?

We could not find an official Opesa website or a current app listing that names the company behind it. Only an official source from the app itself can settle that, so ask the app for its registered company name.

How do I check if a loan app is licensed in Kenya?

Find the registered company name in the app or its terms, then search for it in CBK's Directory of Digital Credit Providers, or in our list of CBK-licensed digital lenders. If the app will not tell you its company name, do not borrow.

How many digital lenders does CBK license?

281, in the directory updated on 29 September 2026.
