Load the card on M-PESA
- Open M-PESA and choose Lipa na M-PESA, then Pay Bill.
- Enter business number 872651.
- Enter your 16-digit card number as the account number.
- Enter the amount, check the name on the confirmation screen, then enter your PIN.
The same steps work for the Safari, Travel and Multicurrency cards.
Mpesa Xpress, without the paybill menu
- On the I&M Kenya website, open Online Services and choose Mpesa Xpress.
- Enter the 16-digit card number and the amount.
- Enter your phone number, then approve the M-PESA PIN prompt on your phone. Keep the screen unlocked so the prompt appears.

Other banks' ATMs may add their own surcharge on the Travel and Multicurrency cards.
Getting the card
Take the application form with your ID or passport and a copy, your KRA PIN and a recent passport photo to any I&M branch. I&M issues the card on the spot. The form asks what you need the card for and how often you will use it.

FAQ
What is the I&M prepaid card paybill?
I&M's prepaid card pages give paybill 872651, with your 16-digit card number as the account number. It is a different number from 542542, which is for I&M bank accounts.
Does I&M charge to reload the card?
I&M lists the card reload fee as nil on all three prepaid cards. You still pay the normal M-PESA paybill charge.
How much can I load?
The Safari card page says up to KES 700,000, but the same page also says the maximum is KES 500,000 per load. The Travel and Multicurrency cards load up to USD 15,000. Loads or reloads above KES 1 million need a source-of-funds declaration.
Do I need an I&M account?
Not for the Safari card. I&M says you can buy, pay and pick it up at any branch without an account. For all three cards you take the application form, your ID or passport and a copy, your KRA PIN and a passport photo to a branch.
Can I load US dollars from M-PESA?
M-PESA sends shillings. On the Travel and Multicurrency cards the bank converts at its rate when the money lands. I&M says the Multicurrency card locks in the rate at the time you load.
