Co-operative Bank of Kenya (Co-op) is one of the country's largest banks by branch network and SACCO sector reach. Sending M-PESA to Co-op is the standard way most Kenyans deposit into their Co-op accounts or pay people who bank there. The default route is paybill 400200; there are also app-based and USSD options. This guide walks through each method.

Three ways to send from M-PESA to Co-op

  1. Paybill 400200 — sends to any Co-op account holder. Standard route.
  2. MCo-opCash app pull — for moving M-PESA to your own Co-op account.
  3. Co-op USSD *667# — pull from M-PESA via the Co-op USSD menu.

Method 1 — M-PESA paybill 400200

  1. Open M-PESA.
  2. Select Lipa na M-PESA → Pay Bill.
  3. Business number: 400200.
  4. Account number: the Co-op account number (typically 13-15 digits).
  5. Amount.
  6. M-PESA PIN, confirm.

Two confirmation SMS — M-PESA transaction code and Co-op deposit notification. Funds reflect 1-15 minutes typically.

Fees

Standard 2026 paybill tariff (paid by the sender):

  • KES 100 or less: free
  • KES 1,000: KES 10
  • KES 5,000: KES 34
  • KES 10,000: KES 48
  • KES 50,000: KES 67
  • KES 100,000+: KES 105

Method 2 — MCo-opCash app pull

From the MCo-opCash app, pull funds from M-PESA into your own Co-op account.

  1. Open MCo-opCash and log in.
  2. Select "Get Money from M-PESA" or "M-PESA → Co-op".
  3. Enter amount.
  4. STK push to your Safaricom line — confirm with M-PESA PIN.
  5. Funds move from M-PESA to your Co-op account.

Co-op charges a small service fee on these pulls (typically KES 30-50). For amounts under KES 5,000, the paybill 400200 route is usually cheaper.

Method 3 — Co-op USSD *667#

On any phone — feature phone or smartphone — dial *667# to access Co-op services without an app:

  1. Dial *667# from your registered Co-op-linked Safaricom number.
  2. Select "Get Money from M-PESA" or similar.
  3. Enter amount, confirm with PIN.

USSD is the cheapest channel for amounts under KES 1,000 and works without a smartphone.

Where to find the Co-op account number

  • MCo-opCash app — under My Accounts
  • The Co-op ATM card (printed under the chip)
  • A Co-op bank statement
  • By calling Co-op Bank: 0703 027 000

Co-op account numbers in Kenya are typically 13-15 digits. Several formats exist depending on the account type — savings, current, fixed deposit, salary, foreign currency. All accept the same paybill 400200 with the correct account number routing them to the right account.

Common mistakes

  1. Wrong paybill (400022, 400020, etc.). Co-op is exactly 400200. Triple-check.
  2. Account number errors. Adding spaces or dashes to the account number fails — only digits accepted.
  3. Sending to a closed account. Co-op auto-reverses to M-PESA within 24-72 hours. Check status before sending large amounts.
  4. Paybill above KES 250,000. M-PESA per-transaction cap. Split or use bank-to-bank.

Sending from Co-op to M-PESA

The reverse direction:

  • MCo-opCash app: Send Money → M-PESA → enter phone, amount, confirm
  • USSD *667#: Send Money → M-PESA
  • Same-day settlement
  • Co-op fee per the Co-op tariff (typically KES 30-110 depending on amount)

Branch-specific account number formats

Older Co-op accounts (opened pre-2015) sometimes use a different account-number format prefixed with a branch code. The paybill 400200 system handles both old and new formats — just enter exactly what's printed on the recipient's ATM card or statement.

Troubleshooting

  1. Confirm M-PESA SMS shows paybill 400200
  2. Verify account number matches recipient's exactly
  3. Recipient checks MCo-opCash app for current balance
  4. If missing after 1 hour: Co-op customer care 0703 027 000 with M-PESA transaction code
  5. M-PESA reversal as last resort via *234# → Reverse
